=== Some background information concerning Jenkin ab Adam and his wife Gwenllian (Gwenllion) ===
Hywel ap Gwilym ap Jenkin is the son of Gwilym ap Jenkin ap Adam and his wife Gwenllian verch Gwilym Ichon. This Jenkin is also called John-Herbert ab Adam alias Jenkin or Jenkin Herbert ap Adam, who also married a woman named Gwenllian, but records do not agree on who her father was. Jenkin and Gwenllian and son Gwilym (William) are documented as follows.
A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland states the following: "The younger son, John-Herbert ap Adam, alias Jenkin, lord of Gwarindee, m. Gwenllion, daughter of Sir Aaron ap Bledri, knt. and left a son and heir, William (Gwilym) ap Jenkin...."
A Genealogical History of the Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited and Extinct Peerages of the British Empire states: "The younger son, Jenkin Herbert ap Adam, Lord of Gwarinddu, by Gwenllian, his wife, dau. of Sir Aaron ap Bleddyn, Knt, had a son and heir, William ap Jenkin...."
A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland states: The younger son, John-Herbert ap Adam, alias Jenkin, Lord of Gwarindee, m/ Gwenllion, dau. of Sir Arron ap Bledri, Knt., and left a son and heir, William ap Jenkin...."
The "Family of Herbert" in Archaeologia Cambrensis states: "The younger son, Jenkin, inherited the estates of his mother, and resided at Perth-hir, near Monmouth. He married Gwenllian, daughter of Rys ap Llewelyn ap Ivor, descended from Cedivor, Lord of Blaencych. By this lady, Jenkin ap Adam Fitz-Herbert had two sons, Gwillim and Philip."
The Annals and Antiquities of the Counties and County Families of Wales states: "John Herbert ab (son of) Adam, alias Siencyn (misspelt and miscalled Jenkin), Lord of Gwern Ddu, m. Gwenllian, dau. of Sir Aron ab Bledri, Kt., and left a son and h. Gwilym ab Siencyn (misspelt William ab Jenkin)...."
The book "John Pidding Jones: His Ancestors and Descendants" lists Gwenllian Vaux, daughter of Rees, as the wife of Jenkin and lists their son as Gwilym. The father of Gwenllian (Rees) may, in fact, be the same person as listed in the "Family of Herbert" as Rys ap Llewelyn ap Ivor. Then again, it may not.
From the above accounts, it is apparent that Jenkin [Welsh Siencyn] married Gwenllian (Gwenllion), but there appears to be some disagreement as to who her father was, Aaron or Rees (Rys). Four of the records above list Aaron, son of Bledri (Bleddyn) as her father, and one record lists her father as Rees and one record as Rys. There is also disagreement as to the number of sons she had by Jenkin, but they all seem to agree that William (Gwillim or Gwilym) was her son.
Jenkin ap Adam (John-Herbert ab Adam, alias Jenkin) was the son of Adam FitzHerbert who married Christian (Christiana) Ddu.
A pedigree published in Collections Historical & Archaeological Relating to Montgomeryshire, Vol. V, pages 158-159, documents the first eleven generations of the John Pidding Jones line in England and Wales following the conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066. An explanation of that pedigree follows. It begins with Herbert [Herbertus Camerarius]; followed by his son Henry FitzHerbert [Henrici Tresaurij]; followed by his son Herbert FitzHenry [Herbert FitzHerbert I or Herbert of Winchester]; followed by his son Herbert FitzHerbert [Herbert FitzHerbert II]; followed by his son Peter FitzHerbert; followed by his son Reginald FitzPeter; followed by his son Peter FitzReginald; followed by his son Herbert FitzPeter, Lord of Llanllowel; followed by his son Adam FitzHerbert, Lord of Llanllowel; followed in the so-called “B” line by his son Jenkin ab Adam [Jenkin ab Adam, alias Herbert]; followed by his son Gwillim ab Jenkin [Gwillim ab Jenkin, alias Herbert]; followed by his son Thomas ab Gwillim [Thomas ab Gwillim ab Jenkin, alias Herbert]. It is noted that Thomas ab Gwillim was the fourth son of Gwillim ab Jenkin. The John Pidding Jones line descends from Gwillim ab Jenkin through Howell ab Gwillim, the third son of Gwillim ab Jenkin. Thus, the pedigree does not follow the John Pidding Jones line after Gwillim ab Jenkin [son: Howell ab Gwillim], but rather the line of Thomas ab Gwillim.
