Mary's parents are apparently unknown. Richardson does not list her with either of the Ralph Cromwells (Royal Ancestors)-daughters of Ralph and Avice are Margaret and Joan, and daughters of Ralph and Maud are Elizabeth, Avice, Maud. (research by Robin Anderson; see comments section). Thus Ralph Cromwell and Avice Bellers have been disconnected.
«b»Research«/b»
Unfortunately for us, the following shows (1) there were only three daughters of Ralph Cromwell and Mary is not one of them, (2) Maud Cromwell did not marry Robert Whitney.
«b»from soc.genealogy.medieval discussion by Douglas Richardson:«/b»
The reader is referred to the Cromwell account in Complete Peerage. In Volume 3 (1913): 554, footnote c, it is stated that on the death of Joan Stanhope, Lady Cromwell in 1490,"the representation of the Barony devolved on her sister [Maud Stanhope], after whose death s.p. in 1497, it vested in the representatives of the three sisters of the 2nd Lord, viz. (1) Hawise, who married Thomas, Lord Bardolph, represented by the Earl of Abingdon and Lord Beaumont; (2) Maud, who married Sir William Fitzwilliam of Sprotborough (from whom the Copleys) of Sprotborough); and (3) Elizabeth, who married, 1stly, Sir John Clifton (from whom the Knevitts of Buckenham), and 2ndly, Sir Edward Benstead."
No information is provided by Complete Peerage regarding the history of Maud Cromwell, following the death of her husband, Sir William Fitzwilliam, in 1398. Recently I found new evidence which proves that Maud married (2nd) before 4 November 1417 (date of lease) Thomas Darcy, Knt. On that date, Sir Thomas Darcy leased the manor of Haddlesey (in Birkin), Yorkshire (a Fitzwilliam family property) to his step-son, John Fitzwilliam, Knt., the said John to pay to Maud, wife of the said Thomas, 48 marks per annum.
That Maud, wife of Sir Thomas Darcy, named in the above lease is the same person as Maud Cromwell is indicated by a subsequent Court of Common Pleas lawsuit dated 1419, which shows that Thomas Darcy and his wife, Maud, acting as executrix of the will of William Fitz William, Knt., sued Richard Claypham, of Allerton, Nottinghamshire, yeoman for a reasonable account during the time he was receiver of money for the said William.
Note: The Cromwell family is connected to the Whitneys in previous generations, again from a discussion by Douglas Richardson in soc.gen:
Papal Registers: Letters 2 (1895): 144 indicates that John de Cromuel [Cromwell], constable of the Tower, was styled "uncle" of Baldwin de Wyeteney [Whitney], a cleric, in 1317. How were the two men related? Sir John de Cromwell's had an older half-sister, Joan de Cromwell, who married Sir Alexander de Freville, which couple in turn were the parents of Elizabeth de Freville, who married in 1301 Eustace de Whitney. It would appear that Baldwin de Whitney was a child of Elizabeth (de Freville) de Whitney. If so, it would make Sir John de Cromwell the great-uncle to Baldwin de Whitney.
More research required.
