I. 1259. JOHN - FITZ - THOMAS (FITZ-GERALD), of Connelloe [or O'Connell], co. Limerick, s. and h. of Thomas FITZ-MAURICE (FITZ-GERALD) of the same by Ellenor, da. of Jordan and sister of Geoffrey DE MARISCO, Justice of Ireland (which Thomas is said to have been s. to Maurice FITZ GERALD, one of the Conquerors of Ireland, and br. to Gerald, ancestor of the Earls of Kildare [I].) suc. his father in 1213, and having m. Margery, da. and coheir of Thomas FITZ ANTHONY, of Thomastown, c. Kilkenny, Lord of the Honour of Kerry(a) and Seneschal of Leinster, acquired with her (before 1232) the Baronies of Decies(b) and Desmond, and obtained from Prince Edward (to whom the dominion of Ireland had been granted) by charter 7 Nov. (1259) 44 Henry III a grant of those Baronies together with the Castle of Dungarvan(b) whereby he may not improbably be considered a peer as LORD OF DECIES AND DESMOND(c) [I]. He is sometimes stated to have m., secondly, Honora O'CONNOR, but it is doubtful whether this lady (by whom he had four sons, each ancestor of a numerous race) was his wife. He d. 1261 being slain in a fight at Callan and was bur. in the Monastery of Tralee of which he was founder.

JOHN FITZTHOMAS, called "John of Callan," Lord of O'Connelloe and of Decies, Desmond, and Dungarvan, granted to him by Edward, Prince of Wales, by charter dated at Bermunedseye, 7 November, 44th Henry III., (1259). He was killed at the battle of Callan, and was buried in the north part of the monastery of Tralee, of which he was the founder. He m. Margery, dau. and co-heir of Thomas FitzAnthony, Lord of Decies and Desmond, seneschal of Leinster, and BAILIFF of the co. of Kerry, by whom he had issue,

VI. JOHN FITZTHOMAS FITZGERALD, his son and heir, Lord of O'Connelloe, and of Decies and Desmond, in right of his wife. He married, first, Margery, daughter and co-heir of Sir Thomas FitzAnthony,(9) Lord of Decies and Desmond, Seneschal of Leinster, and Bailiff of Kerry. With this lady he received as dowry the lands of Decies and Desmond, with all the bailywicks, returns of the sheriffs, etc., and the custody of the castle of Dungarvon; all which possessions were confirmed to him by Prince Edward, by charter dated Bermondsey, 7th November, 1259. By this marriage he had issue:--(1) Maurice FitzJohn, second Lord of Decies and Desmond, slain at Callan with his father, in 1261; ancestor of the Earls of Desmond. (2) Osborn, or Osbert, settled in Wales about the middle of the 13th century, and obtained considerable property in Merionethshire; ancestor of the Wynnes of Peniarth. (3) John, of whom we have no further record. (1). Olyvia, married to Elias Keting.
John FitzThomas married secondly, Honora, daughter of Phelim MacHugh O'Connor Don of Connaught, by whom he had issue:--(1) Gilbert, or Gibbon, from whom the clan Gibbon descend; the chief branches of which were the White Knight, the sept of Kylemore, and the sept of the Old Knight (Mac an tSen Riddery). (2) John, to whom his father the castles and manors of Glyncorbery and Beagh, in the county of Limerick; ancestor of the Knight of Glin (called also the Black Knight, or the Knight of the Valley), and of the FitzGeralds of Clenlish, in the county of Limerick. (3) Maurice, whose line we follow. (4) Thomas, ancestor of the FitzGeralds of Castle Island, in the county of Kerry.
John FitzThomas FitzGerald was slain at Callan, in Desmond, in a great battle fought there between the Geraldines of Desmond and the MacCarthys of Carbery, A.D. 1261. He was buried, together with his eldest son Maurice, in the Dominican Friary of Tralee, which he had himself founded in 1243.

He was Lord of Decies and Desmond and a Count Palatine in the year 1259. By virtue of the latter royal position, he created three of his sons by his second wife Honora, hereditary knights; and thus originated the titles of the "White Knight," the "Knight of Glyn" and the "Knight of Kerry."
He also was father of a son by his first wife, who was called, OSBORN FITZGERALD. This son was also denominated by the Welsh heralds, Osborn Wyddel (Osborn, the Irishman).
