Richard the Forester’s son Ormus (c 1075 – 1141) was given the title “Le Guidon” or standard bearer, being standard bearer for William II (William Rufus) or during the First Crusade. Ormus Le Guidon acquired further lands to his already extensive inheritance and became a powerful nobleman. Ormus was responsible for the building of the church at Ormskirk. when he joined the Crusades against the Saracens he became the standard bearer (le Guidon). Orms' home was at Darlaston, near Wolverhampton, the ' De Darlaston' family remained lords of the manor there until the 15th century. Orm moved from Derbyshire to the Ormskirk area during or after 1086 when land was redistributed by King William. In 1186,Ormskirk was part of the endowment of Burscough Priory, it was donated Robert Fitz-Henry a descendant of Orm. He took the title Lord of Darlaston and married Emma de Beauchamp in about 1119. His first son, Richard succeeded him at Darlaston. His second son, Edward* (c 1127 – 1180) took the name Biddulph (de Bidulfe) from his inheritance of the Middle Biddulph region in Staffordshire.
Of the descendants of Ormus , the descent is thus shortly traced of the female elder branch, through the Verdon, Manwarings, and Audleys, and of his fourth son, Alured, to the Bowyers and c.
The lineal male representative of Ormus Le Guidon ( on failure of the male line of Robert Darleston, his eldest son ) and the direct line of Biddulph come from Edward, his second son, who first took the name of BIDDULPH from that part of the family possessions, which has continued in the same line in direct uninterrupted descent for twenty generations, during a period of more than seven hundred years. Orme was married to Alice - the daughter of Hervens , a Norman nobleman and was given four caracutes of land in Lancashire and neighbouring counties. One caracute is the amount of land that one pair of oxen can plough in one year. Orme was responsible for the building of the church at Ormskirk and also others as well. Legends tell that he returned home with Saracen stone masons who were involved in building the church of St. Chad in Stafford. Ormskirk was part of the endowment of Burscough Priory , it was donated by Robert FitzHenry, a descendant of Orm. Oriental style designs can be found in the early 12th Century St Chads' church, Stafford, where an original inscription tells us that " Orm caused me to be established". This name and family claims a Saxon origin and derivation such as few now extant in England can boast. Biddulph, variously written Bydulf, Bradulf, &c is a word purely Saxon, compounded of Bid, Biedw, and Ulf,or Wulf, literally the wolf-killer. The latter entered into the composition of a vast number of names during the Heptarch, as Etelwulf, Ceolwulf, & c. when skill and courage in the chase of the hordes of this ferocious animal must have been held in high estimation.
