Note: 30. Ithel y Gwion ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn, born c. 1125
Called simply "Y Gwion" in most pedigrees, we think the nickname was corrupted from "y wyrion" or "the grandson". It was rare in that era for a child to be born during the life of his grandfather, but when such a child was given the same name as his grandfather, the nickname was added to distinguish between them...as well as to call attention to the rare feat of even having a living grandfather. Since the grandfather of this man was Ithel Felyn, we suggest his birth name was Ithel the grandson. He succeeded his father as Lord of Ial and Ystrad Alun but during his lifetime lost much of that land and his title to Gruffudd Maelor ap Madog ap Maredudd, king of north Powys. He married Lleuci (c. 1125) ferch Maredudd (c. 1090) ap Cadwgan (c. 1055) ap Bleddyn (c. 1025); they had a 2 sons and a daughter:
40. Cadwgan Goch ap Ithel Y Gwion ap Hwfa
41. Cynddelw ap Ithel Y Gwion ap Hwfa
Nest ferch Ithel Y Gwion ap Hwfa, born c. 1160. She married Radfarch (c. 1150) ap Alser (c. 1115) ap Gwrgi (c. 1080) ap Hedd (c. 1050) ap Alunog (c. 1020) descended from Tudwal Gloff ap Rhodri Mawr.
Pen. 129, 111; Pen. 127, 132 and Pen. 128, 148a cite "Y Gwion ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn" as the father of Cadwgan Goch
Pen. 287, 385 cites "Y Gwion ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn" married "Lleuci ferch Maredudd ap Cadwgan", while Pen. 129, 45 extends her ancestry to "Maredudd ap Cadwgan ap Bleddyn"
Dwnn ii, 278 cites "Cynddelw ap Ithel Felyn" but he was born c. 1155 or 3 generations after Ithel Felyn. We think the Ithel who was father to Cynddelw was the one often called "Y Gwion" who does fit chronologically
Pen 276, 556 cites "Nest ferch Y Gwion ap Hwfa" married "Rhahawd Fach ap Alser ap Gwrgi" while Pen. 128, 258b calls him "Radfach ap Alser ap Gwrgi". HLG 10b extends his ancestry as "Gwrgi ap Hedd ap Alunog"
