As the king's second son, Alfonso did not expect to inherit the throne, which was destined for his brother Sancho. He lived in France, where in 1238 he married Matilda II, heiress of Boulogne, so he became the Count of Boulogne. In 1246, the conflicts between his brother, the king, and the Santa Sede became more intense. Pope Innocent IV excommunicated Sancho and entrusted the government of the kingdom to his brother. Alfonso in the rechazó the papal order and marchó hacia Portugal. Sancho was not a popular king, so it was not difficult to fulfill the order of the Pope: after a civil war, Sancho was exiled to Castile but, nevertheless, Alfonso did not take the royal title until the death of his brother in 1248. ascending the throne resigned from the county in 1253 and divorced his wife Matilda. That same year he married Beatriz de Castilla, illegitimate daughter of the king Alfonso X el Sabio.
Determined not to commit the same mistakes that his brother did, Alfonso III paid attention to the media class composed by the merchants and the small landowners. In 1254, he attended the first session of the Cortes in the city of Leiria, the general assembly composed by the nobility, the media class and representatives of all municipalities. He said that they prevented the upper class from abusing the most disadvantaged population.
Safe on his throne, Alfonso III went to war with the Muslim communities that had previously resided in the south. During his reign, the Algarve became part of the kingdom; After the conquest of Faro, Portugal, it was the first kingdom of the Iberian Peninsula to complete its Reconquest in 1249.
After defeating the Muslims, Alfonso III had to face the growing political problems on the borders with Castilla. The western kingdom considered that the conquered lands of the Algarve belonged to Castile and not to Portugal, which led to a series of confrontations between both countries.
Finally, a Treaty of Badajoz was signed in 1267, which determined that the southern border between Portugal and Castile was established on the Guadiana River. In 1255 Alfonso III moved his court and the capital of the kingdom from Coimbra to Lisbon; capital that remains up to date.
Alfonso III el Boloñés died in 1279 and was succeeded on the throne by his son Dionisio. He was buried in the Monastery of Alcobaça, where he also received the burial of his second wife, Beatriz de Castilla, illegitimate daughter of Alfonso X el Sabio
_______
Portuguese King. Born in Coimbra, the second son of Afonso II and his wife, Urraca of Castile. Alfonso was raised largely in France, and there married Matilda, Countess of Boulogne in 1238.
Within ten years, Pope Innocent IV came into conflict with Sancho II, Alfonso's brother and Portugal's king. The pope ordered Sancho removed from the throne and replaced by the count of Bolougne. The unpopular Sancho was summarily exiled to Castile and Alfonso ascended to the throne after divesting himself of his wife and the title she brought to their marriage.
In 1253, Alfonso married Beatriz of Castile, daughter of Alfonso X the Wise of Castile.
In 1254, Alfonso held the first session of the Cortes, the kingdom's general assembly. Credited as a notable administrator, he founded several towns; instituted administrative and financial reforms, encouraged commerce, reorganized public administration, and made laws restraining the upper classes from abusing the lower. He initiated a Reconquista of Portugal against Moorish settlers in the south, capturing Faro and adding Algarve as part of the kingdom. Alfonso was succeeded by his eldest surviving son, Diniz.

=== Rei afonso lll ===
Afonso III was the fifth king of Portugal and reigned from 1248 until 1279. He is best remembered for completing the reconquest of the West of the Iberian peninsula, that is, of Portugal, and for the style of his government. At a time when many kings saw themselves as ruling more or less by divine right, Afonso III was prepared to share responsibility for governing Portugal. He convened the first ever meeting of a Portuguese Parliament, the Cortes, in which common citizens as well as aristocrats took part. Afonso III appears to have had a genuine concern for the welfare of his most vulnerable subjects, recognizing that they had human rights. Those who helped Alfonso III regain political control of the whole of the Algarve, the southernmost portion of Portugal and helped in the reconquest now felt that they too deserved recognition, despite their not being members of the social elite. Afonso III's contribution to the development of more participatory, egalitarian governance was modest although remarkable for his era. His consideration of his peoples sowed seeds that bore fruit of democracy in Portugal's later history.
