Barbarossa and Beatrix of Burgundy. In 1196 after the death of his brother Konrad he became Duke of Swabia. In 1197 he married Irene Angela of Byzantium. He let himself be elected King in March 1198. He was crowned on September 8, 1198 in Mainz. In 1205 he was again crowned King, but this time in Aachen. While staying in Bamberg he was murdered by Otto of Wittelsbach in an act of personal revenge. Philip was born in or near Pavia in the Imperial Kingdom of Italy as the tenth child and eighth (but fifth and youngest surviving) son of Frederick Barbarossa, King of Germany and Holy Roman Emperor and his second wife Beatrice I, Countess of Burgundy. To improve relationships with the Byzantine Empire, in April 1195 Henry VI betrothed Philip to Irene Angelina, a daughter of Emperor Isaac II.
