=== Life Sketch ===
The origin legend of the Ayala family written three centuries later claimed he was their ancestor, the first lord of Ayala, and illegitimate son of a King of Aragon, but there is no evidence from before the 14th century that this 11th century man even existed.

=== Family origin legend ===
Vela Sanchez was the first lord (not count) of Ayala named by Fernan Perez de Ayala in the account of the family written centuries later. Though this family origin legend is often treated as fact, many families invent royal ancestries for themselves when given three hundred years to work out the details of the claim, and there is no contemporary evidence that he even existed, let alone that he was either illegitimate son of king Sancho Ramirez, as is claimed, or ancestor of the later Ayala lords.
