ASCELIN GOEL, son and heir. He took part in William the Conqueror's invasion of the French Vexin in July 1087 and destroyed the vineyards round Mantes. He built a strongly fortified castle at Breval. In 1089 he took the castle of Ivry by stratagem from William de Bréteuil and delivered it up to Duke Robert. William redeemed the castle from the Duke and deprived Ascelin of the provostship of Ivry. Thereafter Ascelin captured William, and rigorously imprisoned him at Breval until he obtained his freedom on the terms of a money payment, the cession of the castle of Ivry and the marriage of his daughter Isabel to Ascelin. In the following year William attempted to retake the castle, but was defeated by Ascelin, the abbey of Ivry being burnt in the conflict. William then. appealed to the King of France and the Duke of Normandy, who in, the spring of 1092, aided by a levée en masse of the surrounding population, besieged Ascelin at Breval. Ascelin was forced to capitulate and surrender the castle of Ivry, which was restored to William. On the death of William de Bréteuil in 1103, Ascelin took the part of William's nephew, Ralf de Grancei, against Eustace de Bréteuil, William's illegitimate son, in the struggle for the succession.

----
Per Burke, he, like his father, "held a distinguished place in the Norman army of the conquest, and for his services, had a grant of divers manors, particularly of Weston and Stawell, co. Somerset. He was as a man of a violent temper, and hence acquired the surname of Lupus, or the Wolf." He had a "long and extraordinbary" dispute with the Earl of Bretivil (Bretuel), which resulted in a two month seige at his castle of Breverhal (in Normandy), but he was able to obtain good terms, including the retention of his castle and the hand of the earl's daughter, Isabella, in marriage. They had a daughter and seven sons, of which only three names are known, Robert, who died without issue, William who succeeded his father as earl, and John, who acquired the manor of Hapetre (Harptree) and assumed that surname (which his descendants changed to Gourney). Isabella, although illegitimate, became heir in part to her father, through the favor of king Henry I. As a result of this, Ascelin became Earl of Yvery in 1119, but he died shortly thereafter. Ascelin Gouel de Perceval, surnamed Lupus, or the Wolf, from the violence of his temper. He was also an adventurer with the Conqueror, and obtained many large manors in England, besides those granted to this father, particulary Weston, in Gordano, Stawell, %c. in the county of Somerset. He married Isabella, daughter of William, Earl of Breteull, Pacey, Constantin, and Yvery, (which alliance brought a near relationship to William the Conqueror,). [Burke's Commoners IV:609]
