Rise to power
He rose to the count dignity of Pallars Sobirá on the death of his older brother Bernardo II de Pallars Sobirá .
The most notable events of the government of Artal I were the battles he had with his first cousin Ramón IV , in continuous attacks against the lands of the county of Pallars Jussá .
He died excommunicated in 1081 and was succeeded by his eldest son Artal II of Pallars Sobirá .
