'Bowen of Pentre Ifan and Llwyngwair' in The Pembrokeshire historian journal of the Pembrokeshire Local History Society, no.6:
Sir James died between 1518 and 1532, as shown by a deed executed in the latter year which refers to properties at Gumfreston and near Tenby, bounded by lands "of the heirs of Sir James ap Owen, knight".
He had been married twice.
By his first wife Jane daughter of Jenkin Perrot of Caerforiog in Dewsland, member of the powerful family of Perrot of Haroldston, he had four sons and five daughters (Dwnn, i, 61, 169), namely:
1. John Bowen, eldest son, see later.
2. Owen Bowen, see later.
3. William Bowen.
4. William Bowen Wen iangaf.
5. Alson married Rhys ap Rhydderch of Towyn near Cardigan.
6. Annes married William Vaughan of Trimsaran, Carmarthenshire.
7. Elizabeth married (i) John Reed of Roches near Laugharne, and (ii) Reynold Morgan.
8. Elen married (i) Rees ap Jenkin of Llanerch-y-Bleiddie, Nevern, and (ii) John Howel David Thomas of Wernan, Cardiganshire.
9. Elizabeth junior married Henry Mores of Castle Villa, Brawdy.
Sir James married secondly, Mary daughter of John Herle of Brecon by Margaret daughter of Thomas ap Griffith of Dynevor, widow of Sir Richard Herbert of Coalbrook. Mary's inquisition post mortem was taken on 25 June 1547.
By her, Sir James had four sons and nine daughters (Dwnn, op. cit, i, 169), namely:
1. & 2. William and Lewis Bowen, both died issueless.
3. Mathias Bowen who settled at Llwyngwair see later.
4. Nicholas Bowen, died issueless.
5. Elizabeth married William Philipps of Pendibarch (Pentypark).
6. Jenet married David Thomas of Park y Pratt (he d. 10 May 1601).
7. Jenet the younger married Elisse ap Morris of Clenennau, Caer- narfonshire, and had issue.
8. Alice married Richard Edward Howel of Vaynor and Berriew, Mont- gomeryshire, and had issue.
9. Catherine married (i) Griffith son of William Vaughan of Cilgerran and had a daughter, (ii) John ap Rees Fychan of Penbryn, Cardiganshire, and had a son Morgan John.
10. Joan married John Vaughan of Pontfaen (settlement 1541) and had issue.
11. Jane married (i) David Young of St. Dogmaels, and had a son Richard, (ii) Lewis David Lloyd of Cilie Aeron, Cardiganshire, and had a son Hugh.
12. Margaret married John Voyle of Haverfordwest, merchant (his will proved in 1579) and had issue.
13. Jane, junior, died young.
[14.] In addition to this ample quiverful there was a natural daughter, Margaret who married firstly Philip Perkin of Dewsland and secondly Griffith ap Ievan ap Howel ab Eynon.

In 1516 Henry VIII commissioned Sir James Bowen to be auditor and attorney for the barony of Cemais (Cemmaes), to take fines of tenants, punish offenders, etc. , as follows: "Lr'a atturnat Jacobi Bowen ar' de terr in Berllan, Lignant Comeog. Treepriske, Keuenllimwith, Carn y menyn in paroch de Nigra grangia cum pertin' in Baronia de Kemes in com' Pembrock."
This was the period when the family became seated at Llwyngwair

Sir James Bowen was born about 1480 of Pentre Evan and Llwyngwair, Pembroke, Wales. He married Mary Hearle Hale of Brecknockshire, Wales. He married second Jane Perott, daughter of Jenkyn Perott. He was knighted as Sir James Bowen and was the commissioner of Revenue to Henry VIII. Their children were Sioned, William ca 1522, Lewis ca 1523, Mathias, Elizabeth ca 1526, Janet, Alson or Alcie, Katran, Jowan, Nicklas ca 1535, Jane ca 1537, and Marged.
