=== !NOTE: My translation of "Pereiras Titul ===
!NOTE: My translation of "Pereiras Titulares e Titulares Pereiras," (pp. 18-20): "Dom Rodrigo Forjaz, the progenitor of the Palmeiras and the Pereiras, was present at the battle of Navas de Tolosa, during which, the legend states, a florentine cross rose in the sky [as a sign that God would help the Christians defeat the Moors]. Rodrigo was a companion of the Count Dom Henrique, obedient to him from 1097 until at least the middle of the twelfth century.
Rodrigo was of the illustrious House of the Counts of Trastâmara. After having become the Count of Portugalense, in the end of the 11th century, he seems to have returned to Castile, where his house was situated."
!NOTE: My translation of "Amorial Lusitano," (pp. 428-430): "Pereira is one of the most noble lines of Portugal even though the name has become very commonplace. Genealogists claim that Dom Mendo, brother of Desidério, the last king of the Longobardos, came from Italy in the year 740 with a powerful fleet to conquer the kingdom of Galicia and to be its sovereign, but the plan was frustrated by a large storm at the cape of Piorno, from which only five knights were rescued; they eventually arrived in the port of Galicia. Dom Afonso I was ruler in Leon at that time, and Dom Mendo remained in Leon as a subject of Afonso. Dom Mendo married in Spain with the countess Dona Joana Romais, the daughter of the Infante Dom Romao Bermudes, legitimate son of the former king of Leon, Dom Fruela I.
This Dom Mendo had a son named Dom Froia Mendes, a good knight who was married with Dona Grixivera Alvares das Astúrias. These parents had Dom Bermudo Forjaz, who was given the lands of Trastamara by his father, became a count and married with Dona Aldonça Rodrigues, his cousin, who was the daughter of Dom Rodrigo Romais, the count of Monterroso, brother of Bermudo's grandmother, Dona Joana Romais. Of Bermudo and Aldonça was born, among others, Dom Rodrigo Forjaz de Trastamara, who was not made conde, but was a valorous warrior who fought against the Moors in the time of Dom Fernando, King of Leon. When this monarch divided the kingdoms among his children, Dom Rodrigo followed the party of Dom Garcia, King of Galicia and Portugal, with whom he was in the battle of Agua de Maias, where he was severely wounded. He was also involved in the battle of Santarém, which the king Dom Sancho, handed over to his brother Dom Garcia, and after the transition, he died. Rodrigo's wife, Dona Moninha Gonçalves, daughter of Dom Gonçalo Mendes de Maia and of his wife, had Dom Froia Bermudes, who succeded Rodrigo in his house and with Dona Elvira Gonçalves, daughter of Gonçalo Munhoz de Vila Lobos, "o Despinhado," had Dom Rodrigo Forjaz of Tratamara.
This Dom Rodrigo Forjaz found himself in the battle of Navas de Tolosa with the king Dom Afonso VII; he also provided great services to King Dom Fernando, capturing Seville and, by following Dom Rodrigo's wise counsel, this prince came to possess many places that had been under the control of the Moors. Because of ill-will incurred with Diogo Lopes de Biscaia, he went over to France, where the King used his counsel and gave him various assignments.
King Dom Fernando held Rodrigo in high esteem; he arranged for the king of France give Rodrigo many mercies and honors. Rodrigo married with Dona Urraca Rodriges de Castro, daughter of Dom Rodrigo Fernandes de Castro, "o Calvo" ("the Bald"), a rich man, lord of the house of Castro, and of the Countess Dona Estevainha Pires de Trava. Born of this marriage, among others, was Dom Gonçalo Rodrigues de Palmeira, a rich man, who because of differences that he had with his nephew Dom Alvaro Pires de Castro, in the time of King Dom Fernando, "o Santo" ("the Saint"), whom he served, came to Portugal, where he served Dom Sancho I, who gave him for his services the land of Palmeira, in the province of Entre Douro e Minho, near the river Ave, and by virtue of this domain he was named Palmeira. Gonçalo Rodrigues, in 1177, with the confirmation of his sons Fernao Gonçalves and Gonçalo Gonçalves, gave from the mentioned land to the church authorities of Landim, in which they made a great country villa. There was much jealousy of the honor [that Gonçalo Rodrigues had been given this land]. In view of the fact that Dom Guterre de Castro had proclaimed the land for himself through a lie wherein he declared that his nephew D. Alvaro was near to dividing up the property that they had conquered and with the soldiers, Gonçalo gave him a tremendous cut in the shoulder with his sword, separating him from top to bottom down to the waist.
Dom Gonçalo Rodrigues was married two times: the first time with Dona Froile Afonso, daughter of the count Dom Afonso de Cela Nova, brother of S. Rosendo; by her they had children and among them Dom Rui Gonçalves de Pereira; and the second time with Dona Urraca Viegas, widow of Conde Dom Vasco Sanches and daughter of Dom Egas Moniz of Riba de Douro, private tutor of King Dom Afonso Henriques, and of his wife, Dona Teresa Afonso.
Dom Rui Gonçalves of Pereira was a rich man and took the name of the villa that he owned near the river Ave, in the land of Palmeira, which had a tower that existed in ruins in the beginning of the nineteenth century. He was with his father in many battles and had the castle of Lanhoso. He married the first time with Dona Inês Sanches, who fell in love with a friar from the monastary of Bouro and had an affair with him in the castle. Dom Rui Gonçalves, who was outside of the castle, found out about his wife's infidelity. In retribution he locked the doors, leaving everyone inside, including the friar, servants and animals, and let them all burn in a fire. Some people chastised him, saying that the servants that were left to die were innocent, but he responded to them that for seventeen days the friar met with his wife inside the castle and it was impossible for the servants to be ignorant of the affair during such a long time and therefore they were all accomplices, because nobody informed him of the affair.
Dom Rui Gonçalves married a second time to Dona Sancha Henriques de Portocarreiro, daughter of Dom Henrique Fernandes magro, second lord of the land of Portocarreiro, and by his wife, Dona Ouroana Reimondes de Portocarreiro. Of this marriage there were children who in turn had children who also carried the name of Pereira, which name had eventually lost the significance of its geographical origin.
