  In 1288, serving as 'escudero' (shield-bearer) for his feudal lord, Lope Diaz de Haro, lord of Viscaya, he accompanied him for a royal audience at Alfaro. Unbeknownst to them, other men at court had set this up in order to arrest the overly-powerful nobleman, but the plans somehow went drastically awry, in a manner that saw the Viscaya lord approach the king with unknown intentions and bearing a knife, at which point he and his men were set upon and killed. Though of insufficient importance for the chronicles that reported the event to mention, the death of Sancho Perez de Ayala at Alfaro as part of Lope Diaz de Haro's retinue was recorded in the family history written by his grandson.
