  William Thomas GROAT, the son of Peter Groat, Jr., (144) and Amanda Rogers, was born April 12, 1818. The records of Christ's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghent indicate that he married January 6, 1842, Augusta Van Deusen, the daughter of Simeon van Deusen and his 2nd wife Hannah Crandall, born February 15, 1823. The wedding was conducted at the home of the bride in the presence of William Huested and Eliza Andrewsof Chatham. The 1855 New York State census lists his occupation as "merchant" (age 37), his wife Augusta (age 33), his daughters -- Ellen (age 10) and Anna L. (age 7), and his son - William (age 1). William Thomas was a charter member of Morning Star Lodge Number 128, of the International Order of Odd Fellows, instituted at Chatham, September 23, 1844, and he served as its first treasurer. He died on his 44th birthday, April 12, 1862.
