  Maria Deborah GROAT, the daughter of Peter Groat, Jr., (144) and Amanda Rogers, was born January 21 or 22, 1825. The records sometimes refer to her as "Deborah M." Records of the Protestant Dutch Church of Chatham show that she married Major Josiah Hunt, October 10, 1843. MajorHunt, educated at Brown University, was a civil engineer who served as superintendent of the Connecticut-River Railway and chief engineer of the New Haven and New London Railroad and the Terre Haute and AltonRailroad. A Genealogv of the Hunt Family, compiled by T. B. Wyman, Jr., states that Maria Deborah died at Hannibal, Missouri, "a martyr to her country's cause, from a fever brought on by her exertions in procuring clothing and equipment for the suffering soldiers in Missouri. Other family records indicate the actual date of death may have been July 16 or 24, 1861. They had four daughters.
  
  After the death of Maria Deborah, Major Hunt married Sarah Logan Feland of Woodland, Kentucky. Sarah Logan Feland was the sister of Ann Elizabeth Feland and the half-sister of Ann Garnett Ritter, both of whom who married Peter Benjamin Groat (263). Their mother, Sarah Haskins Logan, first married Thomas Feland and then, after he died, she married Wilson Ritter of Woodland, Kentucky.
