  Caroline Matilda GROAT, the daughter of Peter Groat, Jr., (144) and Amanda Rogers, was born April 4, 1827. On February 27, 1850, she married Barent Van Buren, the son of Barent Van Buren and Catharine Vosburgh, born August 25, 1811. This was Barent's second marriage - his firstwife, Helen Maria Du Bois, died March 19, 1845. He lived first at Waldon, in Orange County, where he had four children by his first wife. Later he moved to Ghent and still later to Chatham, on the old Kline Kill Road where he had a large farm. Barent Van Buren was the 2nd cousin, once removed, of Martin Van Buren, the 8th President of the United States. Caroline and Barent had two children. He died December 17, 1854, and he is buried with his parents, his wives, and his son in the cemetery on Cemetery Road in Ghent. Caroline Matilda outlived him by 54 years and apparently remarried - she wrote a letter to her brother, Peter B. Groat (263), dated March 15, 1877, under the name Caroline Matilda "Pease." Her death came June 1, 1907. She is buried with her firsthusband and son in Ghent.
