  William P. GROAT, the third son of Peter Groat (40) and Maria Cornicker (Kernichen), was born October 4, 1785, and christened "Wiliam Grad"at the Reformed Church of Claverack, October 23, 1785. Sponsors at the christening were "William Peyck" and "Janetje Grad" (42), sister and brother-in-law of the father. "William P. Grod" married Hannah Zufelt (Shufelt) at the Reformed Church of Claverack on November 18, 1809.
  
  Hannah (Anna) Shufelt (born July 31, 1785, and christened August 21, 1785, at the Reformed Church of Claverack), was the daughter of PhilipShufelt (the son of George Adam Shufelt and Catherine Reissdorf, christened at Red Hook Lutheran Church, April 15, 1740) and Sarah Shaver (daughter of Johan Valentine Shaffer and Maria Barbara Meyer). The background of the Shufelt family is discussed in some detail in the section dealing with Willem W. Groat (127) above. Hannah's sister Sally married Willem W. Groat (127); her sister Rebecca married Jeremiah Groat (131); her brother Peter married Catherine Groat (129); and her niece Jane married Jacob P. Groat (145).
  
  William P. constituted the third generation of Groats to farm the Groat homestead in West Ghent, Hendrick (5) and Peter (40) having preceded him. His son, Cyrus (248) continued to farm the land until he retired. William P. was elected a supervisor of the town of Ghent in 1849. He died February 12, 1862, and was buried six days later. His wife, Hannah, followed eighteen months later as she died on August 4, 1863, and was buried the next day. William P. and Hannah had ten children:
