  Sally GROAT, the daughter of Jacob Groat (124) and Catharine Jacobi, was born October 14, 1805 and christened at the Reformed Church of Claverack, December 8, 1805. In 1829, she married Cornelius M. Teal, the son of John Teal and Jane Miller, who were natives of Columbia County but, after marriage, settled in Canada. They returned to Columbia County when the War of 1812 broke out and he (John) refused to serve against his native country. They (the parents) died leaving eleven children, nine still living in 1885. Cornelius and Sally adopted a daughter Louisa Karl, who later married Charles Carey of Binghampton, New York, and had three children. A History of Broome County includes the following biography:

  Teal, Cornelious M., P.O. Kattleville, born in lower Canada in 1805, wife Sally Groat, daughter of Jacob and Catharine Groat, born in Columbia County in 1805, married in 1839, settled in Chinango, Broome County, on their present farm of sixty-five acres and began preparations for clearing and soon had comfortable building erected. They had one adopted daughter, Louisa Karl, now Mrs. Charles Carey, of Binghampton, children three. Parents Abram and Jane (Miller) Teal, natives of Columbia County, married and settled in Canada. When the war broke out in 1812, he returned to Columbia County, as he would not serve against his country, until the war ended. Parents died leaving eleven children, nine now living.
