   Note: John Smyth of Nibley (1567-1640) used original sources, documents and manuscripts held in the Berkeley archives, to create a historical record of the lives the family from 1066 -1618. Volume I covers the lives from Harding to Maurice 'the fourth' (d. 1368). It was John Smyth who gave the Barons their supposed nicknames in order to distinguish between the various characters.

Property: The manor of Lodres Byngham in the county of Dorset and 1 messuage, 3 carucates of land, 20 acres of meadow and 9 marks of rent in Chelrey in the county of Berkshire. Action: Plea of covenant. Agreement: John has acknowledged the tenements to be the right of William, as those which William has of his gift. For this: William has granted to John and Millicent the tenements and has rendered them to them in the court, to hold to John and Millicent and the heirs of John, of the chief lords for ever.

He was the eldest son and heir of Maurice de Berkeley, 2nd Baron Berkeley by his wife Eve la Zouche. He was married twice: Firstly to Margaret Mortimer, daughter of Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March and Joan de Geneville, by whom he had five children. Secondly on 30 May 1347 he married Catherine Clevedon (1321– 13 March 1428) They had four children. He died on 27 October 1361 in Gloucestershire. Baron Berkeley (1326–1361)

   Note: John Maltravers, 1st Baron Maltravers (1290?–1364) was an English nobleman and soldier. He was son of Sir John Maltravers (1266–1343?) of Lytchett Matravers, Dorset, born by his first wife Eleanor, about 1290. He was knighted, as was his father, with Edward, Prince of Wales, on 22 May 1306. He is said to have been taken prisoner at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314. On 20 October 1318 Maltravers was chosen knight of the shire for Dorset. On 5 June 1330 he was summoned to parliament as Baron Maltravers; he was described as a baron by November 1329. Maltravers died on 16 February 1364, and was buried at Lytchett. Firstly to Milicent de Berkeley, a daughter of Maurice de Berkeley, 2nd Baron Berkeley.
