Nicholas Groat
- Preferred Name: Nicholas Groat
- Gender: M
- Birth: ABT 1803
- Notes:
Nicholas GROAT, the son of Philip Groat (76), was born around 1803. The will of Nicholas Groat (12) indicates that Philip had at least one son named Nicholas. This appears to be the Nicholas Groat who enlistedin the Northern Army during the Civil War on the 19th of October, 1861, at the age of 58! He seems to have been able to fool some of the Army's staff as his company commander, on his Certificate of Disability for discharge, stated that he was "forty four years of age" A month later, the post commander certified that he was fifty-eight. It is his request for a pension, filed in Algonac, Michigan, that proves his survivability. In this document, dated August 26, 1890, he is listed as 86and the cause of disability as "a dose of poisoning (supposed to havebeen administered by his third wife, seven years ago last June)." The"third" was written over a second" which had been crossed out. He wasgranted a pension and lived yet another six and a half years and diedJuly 1, 1896, at the assumed age of 93+. We've yet to find out what happened to the third (second?) wife who administered the poisoning butfeel certain that she didn't do as well as Nicholas.
