  Martin GROAT, the son of John Groat (121) and Hannah Pultz, was born November 22, 1821, and christened at Christ's Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Ghent. He is listed in the 1850 Federal census of Ghent, age 30, occupation farmer, living with Henry I. Dunspaugh and Jane (Groat) Dunspaugh (184). He married Amelia (last name unknown), who was born about 1843 in Greene County, New York. In the 1865 state census of Ghent, Martin (age 43, farmer) and his wife Amelia (age 22) are listed as living with the family of brother Edward. Ten years later, they are living in Chatham, ages 52 and 32, with a son William. The 1875 census of Chatham (1st District, Dwelling #195) values his 40 acre farm at $6,000 (including house and other structures). They had at least one child. This may be the Martin Groat who is buried next to his brother Edward - the headstone reads "November 27 or 22, 1823 - May 21, 1888."
