=== Some background information concerning Gunnora de St. Clair ===
Gunnora de St. Clair is mentioned in several historical documents, but they certainly do not all agree on who Gunnora's parents were. A number of the documents suggest that Gunnora is the daughter of one Hubert de St. Clair. However, that appears to be highly unlikely since Hubert de St. Clair reportedly lived about 1060 to about 1100 and Gunnora was not born until about 1135.
Other records suggest that Gunnora is the daughter of Hamo de St. Clair and that seems to be more nearly correct since Hamo was reportedly born about 1084, a son of Hubert, and died about 1139. Yet another record reports that Gunnora is the daughter of Hubert de St. Clair, son of Hamo de St. Clair, son of Hubert de St. Clair.
Volume VII of the Transactions of the Essex Archaeological Society states that Gunnora is the daughter of Hamo and also mentions in another place that she is the daughter of Hamo or Hubert. However, Gunnor's husband, William de Lanvallei, in making benefactions to a local Abbey from his Stanway and Lexdon estates mentions only Hamo and William needing prayers of the Fraternity, suggesting Hubert was not a part of that undertaking.
The genealogy entitled St. Clair - Sinclair appears to be the most correct explanation of Gunnora's parentage when it reports that Gunnora is the daughter of Hubert de St. Clair and his wife Clemence, with Hubert being the son of Hamo de St. Clair and his wife Gunnora and Hamo de St. Clair being the son of Hubert de St. Clair.
Thus, it seems most likely that Gunnora is the daughter of Hubert de St. Clair and his wife Clemence, and granddaughter of Hamo de St Clair and his wife Gunnora, and great granddaughter of the Hubert de St. Clair of about 1060 to 1100. Complicating the entire matter is the fact there appears to be more than one St. Clair named Hubert, including one who died in 1155 saving the life of King Henry II who is likely the Hubert who is Gunnora's father..
The first Hubert in England, the one likely to be the great grandfather of Gunnora, appears to be the son of Bretel de St. Clair who accompanied William the Conqueror to England in 1066.
