=== Life Sketch ===
It's time to catch up with the fact that Edward Parker's wife Elizabeth was NOT born "Elizabeth Wood." She was the widow of John Potter, but her maiden name is unknown. Seemingly no matter how many times I try to correct this notion on Family Search, it keeps rearing its ugly head. -- Barry Wood
See Patricia Law Hatcher's article in The American Genealogist, vol. 79 (2004) at 28ff.
Edward was at New Haven, Connecticut as early as 1644. They married some time before or in early July, 1646 (probably in June) at New Haven. He died there in 1662.
Find A Grave contributor Gloria says that she "has him as having been born in 1598," per the prior version of this sketch, but in reality she has no idea when he was born, or who is parents were. "Having him" in one's papers as "being born in 1598" means nothing without a contemporaneous source to back it up.
That said, we have no clue as to his birth year, other than that he was probably older than Elizabeth. Not even that is certain, as Elizabeth was smitten with Edward but the town fathers wanted her to "quit" him. Why? Perhaps because he was younger and they thought it unseemly for her to be pursuing a younger man? Whatever the cause, Elizabeth got her way; they were married; Elizabeth regained her membership, and Edward was admitted to the Church.
Specifically, on June 2nd 1646 three women (Mrs. Brewster, Mrs. Moore & Mrs. Leach) were charged for "several miscarriages of a public nature." Elizabeth Smith, Mrs. Leach's servant, and fellow servant, Jacob Hall, bring several complaints and charges to the courts. The 12th involving Edward Parker.
Widow Potter "stated that she would not leave Edward." Mrs. Brewster was heard stating that he was not under scandal, but that rather he "had not given satisfaction to the elder," and as a result "they would not let him marry her." Edward and the widow Potter evidently understood the church's proceedings, but wanted clarification as to the reasons why Elizabeth was being kept out of the church and whether it was because she would not part with Edward.
Apparently Edward told Mrs. Brewster that he did not know whether the Church was against the marriage or not. The Church "did not make the match, nor did they go about to break it off, but they advised him to walk accordingly to rule." Mrs. Brewster did not agree with these proceedings and advised him to take two or three people and appeal to the magistrate.
Mrs. Brewster denied this particular allegation and stated that widow Potter and Edward were trying to "currey favor" in order to regain admittance to the church [as if there would be something wrong with that].

Dennis Wright adds:
Edward Parker and Elizabeth were married [in or before] July of 1646 in New Haven Colony. Elizabeth had been married once before, to John Potter [but in Sussex, NOT in Chesham, England!].
John and Elizabeth were among the early settlers of New Haven Colony. John Potter gained "freeman" status, roughly equivalent to what we call citizen, in 1641. He was a "mechanic" which means he built and repaired wrenches [not "wenches," as previously listed in this sketch! - BW] for farmers in the community. He also worked a small farm to feed his family. John died of causes unknown about 1644.
Edward's birth date is best described as "unknown." I believe he was born closer to 1602, but the year 1598 is also possible. 1622 is unlikely as it would make him very young when he married Elizabeth [compared to her likely age].
DNA evidence links one of his sons to a William Parker in Kirby Hill near Manchester, England, but a positive link has not been confirmed. He was a butcher.
The cause of Edward's death is unknown. Peaceful relations with neighboring Native Americans had long been disrupted, yet I find no record of their attacking New Haven in 1662. The New Haven Court records indicate his death, but not its cause.
Edward Parker and John Potter knew each other. Court records indicate they did business with each other a few years before John died. [They were NOT brothers; I have no idea why anyone would imagine such a thing. Potter and Parker are two completely different surnames - BW].
The names of Edward's parents are unknown. The claim that he was the son of William Parker, Earl of Morley has been disproved. The Earl had two sons and neither left England. The elder succeeded him as Earl and the younger died without issue.
The Potter family [DOES NOT! - BW] go "back to Chesham in Buckinghamshire, England." They were a Sussex family - very far from Lancashire.
John Potter traveled to America not only with his wife, but with his mother. Evidently John's brother had come the year prior. John's nephew was born on the "Hector" on the way across the ocean.
Edward, Elizabeth, John, and his family were all buried in the Old Burial Ground. The cemetery was lost for over a century, but found as a result of hurricane damage from Sandy. It was where the present day New Haven Green now stands.
Archeologists are digging out headstones. So far those headstones date only back as far as the mid 1670's. To my knowledge, Edward's grave stone has not been found nor has Elizabeth's.
I searched the recovered headstones in a trip to New Haven. Many of the headstones were worn and either had no names on them to begin with or were worn to such a degree that the names could not be read. I remain hopeful some more of the history will be uncovered.
