Gresley, Lullington, Linton, Donisthorpe, Heathcote, Swad- charter Ron-
lincote, Drakelowe and Caldwell in Derbyshire; Morton, 1308-9, p. 142.
Kingston and Hixon in Staffordshire ; and Toft in Norfolk.
The manor of Eggington in Derbyshire also came to him
through his wife.
His seal is apparently not known to exist, but there is
a coloured full-length portrait T of him, probably drawn for v Brit. Mus.
King Henry vi, which represents 'Sir Peres de Greyle' 4205, foi. 112.

hand and sword in his left: both banner and surcoat bear
the arms vaire ermine and gules.
He married Johanna, daughter and co-heiress of Sir
Robert de Stafford and a lineal descendant of the Toenis.

He is mentioned from 1290 to 1310 but rarely except for fig hting or worse. He was knighted in London by the Prince o f Wales in 1307 probably on Whitsun Sunday, 14 May at Westm inster with about 300 more, and all went at once on a campa ign to Scotland. his estates were large.

In the qualities which make a good soldier he resembled his father, but he inherited also a strain of roughness and violence whichwas transmitted to his sons in a still more marked degree." He often wascited for violent acts or for causing damage, and in 1309 he was fined for "many defaults." He campaigned in Scotland and was knighted in 1307, but hemust have died in the prime of life, about 1309-12. First mention of him wasin 1290.
