=== Life Sketch ===
Early genealogists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, claimed that Nicholas de Grene was the younger half-brother of Sir Henry de Grene, Chief Justice of England. His parents were falsely claimed to be Thomas Greene de Boketon and his second wife, Christian Iwardby de Ireby. Thomas Greene de Boketon was a fictional person, probably an amalgamation between Thomas de Boketon, and Sir Henry de Grene, Chief Justice of England's, younger brother - Thomas de Grene. Different authors placed Nicholas on different parts of the family tree - he was Sir Henry's nephew. The person claimed to be his mother, Christian Iwardby of Ireby, seems to be an another fictional person, which also seems to have been falsified to add more noble heritage to the de Grene family. Christian Iwardby of Ireby is similar to a real person, Christina de Ireby of Iwardby, the grandmother of King Robert de Brus of Scotland, married May 3, 1273. King Robert's grandfather was Robert de Brus, Fifth Earl of Annandale, born circa 1215.
Nicholas de Grene did marry Johanna de Brus of Exton and Rutland. The pedigree of the Grenes of Drayton, designed by Henry Mordaunt, shows no depiction of the Ireby coat of arms. It does show Nicholas with the impaled coats of arms of Grene of Grene's Norton and that of de Brus. Nicholas was not entitled to wear the Grene of Grene's Norton coat of arms, so that depiction is false. Whether the de Brus coat of arms was correct is still a matter of research. Genealogists who supported the claim of Christian Iwardby de Ireby being the mother of Nicholas de Grene, make mention that he used the "Iwardby" coat of arms, of which there is no such thing. There is no actual evidence that Nicholas de Grene used an "Iwardby" or Ireby coat of arms.
