Later Maud wife of Hasculf [de Tany], with her son Gralent, ‘pro anima Asculfi mariti mei’, gave Fyfield church to Bermondsey, thus suggesting to genealogists that Maud was daughter and heir of Roger (Sanders, English Baronies, 4). This cannot have been before 1130, as Hasculf de Tany was then living (PR 31 Henry I, 53, 56, 58, 60). The gift was confirmed by H(enry), bishop of Winchester (1129–1171) and by Henry II in 1154 × 1162 (H2/215), but was nevertheless entered under 1107 in the annals (Annales Monastici, 431). Gralent de Tany confirmed his mother’s gift with the consent of aud his wife and Hasculf his son. The younger Hasculf had succeeded by Michaelmas term 29 Henry II, 1183, when he made a fine with Bertram, prior of Bermondsey, concerning the advowson (MS Glover B, fol. 114r; MS Dodsworth 102, fol. 100v). Bermondsey had a ‘pensio cum portione’ of £4 out of Fyfield in 1535 (Valor, ii. 58b). https://actswilliam2henry1.files.wordpress.com/2018/05/w2-bermondsey-priory-2018-1.pdf

=== Life Sketch ===
Husband's entry in Domesday People:[1]
- He was apparently father, by a second wife Matilda, of Edward of Salisbury the younger, who inherited none of his father's lands but held some in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire of the fee of Ralph fitz Hubert, probably his grandfather. He also had a daughter Matilda, wife of Humphrey de Bohun of Trowbridge.
Williams:[2]
- it was presumably this younger Edward who bore the king's banner at the Battle of Bremule in 1119.[3] The younger Edward does not seem to have held any of the elder Edward's estates; he did, however, hold land in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire which in 1086 belonged to Ralph fitz Hubert, and it is possible that his mother, Maud, was Ralph's daughter. Maud's only known husband is Hasculf de Tony, but she may have been previously married to Edward of Salisbury; Edward the younger was her eldest son. He married Adeliza de Rames, thereby acquiring land in Normandy, and was dead by 1130, when Adeliza was married again, to Pain de Houghton. Her daughter by Edward Leonia, married to Robert de Stuteville.[4]
That Maud had two husbands is confirmed by Farrer and Clay:[5]
- Edward of Salisbury's mother was named Maud, for Maud wife of Hasculf de Tany and Graaland her son were benefactors of Bermondsey abbey, and it was stated in the Gunby case that Edward of Salisbury was the eldest brother of Graelenc de Tani, against whom Robert d'Estouteville had recovered the land. And it has been further suggested that Maud was one of the two daughters of Ralph son of Hubert, the Domesday tenant-in-chief, which would explain the descent of a share of his possessions through Edward of Salisbury to Leonia. However that may be, it is clear that Leonia's interest was inherited from her father.
On the other hand, Mathilda the wife of Hasculf and mother of Graellan has also been described as a likely heiress of a Norman knight. Keats-Rohan has an entry "de Tani, Matildis Uxor Hasculfi".[6]
- Heiress and probably daughter, of Roger, knight of John fitz Waleran, whose grant to Bermondsey priory she and her husband Harscoit/Hasculf de Tany confirmed in 1107.
Keats-Rohan however also writes elsewhere that Ralph fitz Hubert "was doubtless also father of Matilda, second wife of Edward of Salisbury". [7]
There is a relatively recent and detailed summary of this inheritance argument on the Charters of William II and Henry I Project.[8]
- The gift of the tithe of Fyfield is confirmed in identical terms in 000 § 3, not in Regesta. A manor of 1½ hides in Fyfield was held by Roger of John fitz Waleran in 1086 (DB, ii. 84b; Essex § 40.6). The annals report under 1094: ‘Et etiam hoc anno Rogerus miles Iohannis filii Waleranni concedente eodem Iohanne dedit monachis de Bermundeseie decimas de Fifhide quam donationem confirmauerunt Willelmus secundus et Henricus primus reges Anglie’ (Annales Monastici, iii. 428). Henry I’s general confirmation includes ‘the tithe of Fyfield’ but gives no details (H1/000 § 5, Regesta 665). Gralent de Tany confirmed his mother’s gift with the consent of Maud his wife and Hasculf his son. 58b).
Actually Sanders p.4 suggests that Maud is simply the daughter of John fitzWaleran, though noting that perhaps Roger was the father of Hasculf. Roger held Fyfield and this "was one of the Tany lands".

An Edward of Salisbury was a benefactor of Saint-Georges de Boscherville, founded by William de Tancarville (Round, Calendar of documents preserved in France, nos. 211-12, p.70). Professor Crouch identifies the benefactor of Saint-Georges, who also attests charters of William de Tancarville, with the elder Edward of Salisbury and suggests that the latter married a kinswoman of William de Tancarville; see also Chapter VIII below (D.C. Crouch, William Marshal (London, 1990), pp.19-20)." [Note that the later confirming charter is by Robert de Stuteville husband of Leonia. In both charters "Edward" seems to be "Evrard"?]
