EARLDOM OF LINCOLN (IV, 1)
GILBERT DE GANT or GAUNT, son and heir of Walter DE GANT, by Maud, daughter of Stephen, COUNT OF BRITTANY, was born circa 1120, at Bridlington, and baptized there. He fought on the side of Stephen at the battle of Lincoln in February 1140/1, and was there taken prisoner by Ranulph II, Earl of Chester, who compelled him to marry his niece. In 1147 he claimed the honour of Pontefract against Henry de Lacy, and in the fighting which ensued the priory of Pontefract was burnt down, and Gilbert was excommunicated. Although William de Roumare had been created Earl of Lincoln circa 1141, and presumably was still in enjoyment of that earldom, Gilbert was created by Stephen EARL OF LINCOLN circa 1147-48, and in about 1148, as Earl of Lincoln, founded Rufford Abbey, Notts.
He married Rohese, sister of Gilbert and Roger, 1st & 2nd EARLS OF HERTFORD, and daughter of Richard FITZGILBERT of Clare, by Adeliz, daughter of Ranulph I, EARL OF CHESTER, and Lucy his wife. He died s.p.m., in 1156, desiring to be buried at Bridlington Priory, where he had been baptised and brought up from childhood. His widow married Robert, Sewer of William de Percy. Weis. 88-27. Gilbert de Gaunt would appear to be of the generation of Walter de Gaunt 143-24, 156-24, who was son of Gilbert de Gant (Gaunt or Ghent) who died about 1095 (143-22).

Having thus accompanied this family [the "de Roumare" family, Earls ofLincoln] to its termination, we must now go back for more than sixtyyears, to the time of the battle of Lincoln in 1141, in order toexamine how THE EARLDOM WAS DIVIDED, how it was that there were twoEarls of Lincoln at once,--Earl William de Roumare and Earl Gilbert deGant; whilst during the same time their potent kinsman, the Earl ofChester, was the actual lord of the castle and city of Lincoln, and,in fact, acted as the arbiter of the fortunes of both the Earls.
We are told, [Footnote 1: John of Hexham's continuation to thechronicle of Simeon of Durham.] that when the Earl of Chester defeatedKing Stephen, and took him prisoner at the battle of Lincoln [p. 265]in 1141, he also made prisoner Gilbert de Gant, then a youth, who wascompelled by the Earl to take his niece in marriage. But we canscarcely suppose that this compulsory marriage, which brought with itan Earldom, involved any extraordinary hardship. It is certain thatthe youth was already a person of importance, from the wide extent ofhis domains, chiefly lying in this county [Lincolnshire]; and this wasprobably the consideration which made the Earl of Chester anxious tosecure his alliance. GILBERT DE GANT was the representative of afamily which flourished for many generations, both before and afterhis time, in the possession of large territories in Lincolnshire. Hisgrandfather of the same name had come into England with the Conqueror, being nephew to Matilda [CORRECTION: It appears he was the son of the1st cousin of Matilda], the consort of the Norman Duke [William theConqueror], and son of Baldwin, Earl Flanders [CORRECTION: son ofBaldwin de Gand, Lord of Alost]. The second Gilbert's father was namedWalter, and his mother was Matilda, daughter of Stephen, Earl ofBrittany. He was himself born, baptised, and educated at Bridlington,in Yorkshire, as he relates in a remarkable charter, [footnote 2: Mon.Angl., ii. 165.] by which he bound himself to the Church of St. Maryof Bridlington, that, whenever he died, his body should there receivesepulture; engaging, moreover, to become a monk of that house, shouldGod ever move him to assume the habit of religion. We have evidencethat he continued to use the title of Earl of Lincolncontemporaneously with Earl William de Roumare, for many years afterthe battle of Lincoln; and, indeed, there is no doubt that he was sostyled until his death in 1156, which was fifteen years after. Many ofhis charters under this title are extant. [footnote 3: See theenumeration in Topogr. and Genealogist, i. 305.] They do notimmediately present us with dates; but of two of them it may bestates, that he styles himself "Earl" in his charter, whereby theAbbey of Rufford was founded, the date of which event is placed byhistorians either in 1146 or 1148; and that his charter removing theCistercian monks of Byham to Vaudey in this county, was granted at therequest of Eugenius the Roman bishop, who occupied the papal chairfrom 1145 to 1153. We may, therefore, fairly conclude, [p. 266] thatGilbert de Gant continued Earl of Lincoln until his death. His Seal inthe annexed engraving is from a charter preserved in the BritishMuseum. [footnote 4: Harl. Cart. 50 F. 31. It hs been printed in theTopographer and Genealogist, vol. i. p. 317.]
