=== Life Sketch ===
Ferquhard was the 2nd Earl of Strathearn.
Ferteth was born about 1125, son to Malise considered to be the first earl of Strathearn.
About 1145 Ferteth married Ethen whose parents are not discovered. They had issue:
Gilbert heir to the earldom
Malise who mar. Ada daughter of Earl David of Huntingdon
Christain who mar. Walter Olifard according to History of Drummonds [1]
In 1160 KIng Malcolm returned to Scotland having been in France assisting King Henry II of England on a spurious campaign. To attend to pressing business he called for the prelates and nobles to meet him in the burgh of Perth. The local leaders of Scotland had been perturbed by Malcolm's association with Henry II, Ferteth, earl of Strathearn, and five other earls incensed by the king's assistance to Henry and not for personal gain , but rather for the common weal, sought to take him, and laid siege to the castle of Perth. After a few days the king took the advice of the clergy, and reached a good understanding with his nobles. [2] [3]
The 12th century saw the foundation of many religious settlements in Scotland greatly encouraged by the examples of the kings, David , Malcolm and William. The nobility also mirrored this and Earl of Strathearn interest in ecclesiastical affairs is shown by the establishment in his earldom of a diocese called initially Strathearn, later Dunblane, the first bishop there recorded in the time of Pope Hadrian IV in the 1150's. [4]
Ferteth and his wife Ethen endowed the church of St Cathan of Aberruthven with tithes and lands. [5]
About 1170 Ferteth's daughter Christain married Walter Oliphard the earl granted them the lands of Strageath.[6] Walter Oliphart their son exchanged these lands with the earl Gilbert about 1220 and appears in several charters of Gilbert and with Gilbert's brother Malise.
Ferteth earl of Strathearn died in 1171, the same year in which Thomas a Becket was murdered. [7]

=== FERTETH, or FERQUHARD, EARL OF STRATHEAR ===
FERTETH, or FERQUHARD, EARL OF STRATHEARN [SCT], probably son and heir, is thought to have had a principal share in the erection of the diocese of Strathearn, afterwards Dunblane, in or before 1155. In 1160, with five other of the old Celtic Earls, he headed an unsuccessful rebellion against King Malcolm IV, besieging him in the castle at Perth. He married, before 1150, Ethen, whose parentage is not known. He died before December 1170, probably in 1170. [Complete Peerage XII/1:380, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
_______________________________
Ferteth or Ferquhard, who was probably son of Malise. Earl Ferteth frequently appears in charters, and from him the descent is established. He does not, however, appear in history until 1160, when he came to the Parliament held at Perth, and for some reason, still obscure, headed with five other Earls an attack on King Malcolm IV, whom they unsuccessfully besieged in the castle of Perth. The assembled clergy intervened, and the Earls and the King were reconciled. An old chronicler tells us the Earls were actuated by no selfish or treasonable motive, but they believed that the common weal was endangered by Malcolm's friendship with King Henry II of England, and they were afraid of Scotland becoming vassal to England. Earl Ferteth is believed to have taken great interest in ecclesiastical affairs, and to have been mainly instrumental in erecting his own neighbourhood into a diocese called at first Strathearn, then Dunblane, the first bishop of which appears in 1155. The Earl died in 1171. His wife's Christian name was Ethen or Ethne, but her family had not been ascertained. [The Scots Peerage VIII:240-241]
