Robert went on the crusade to Jerusalem where he caught leprosy and returned to Peterborough where he gave his two of his manors to the Abbey of Peterborough. He is called in the records of Torpel, the Leper Lord, a Knight Templar. Ref: Torpel of Northamptonshire, British History on Line, The Leper Lord . Robert designated his brother Roger de Torpel II as the next Baron and took over title as Baron and duties since Robert's children were under age.
