David Langdon Groat, the son of John Groat (91) and Affogena Ann Blakesley, was born at Butler, Wayne County, NY, July 20, 1840. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, enlisting in Company A, of the15th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, under Captain L. D. Kelly, May 24, 1861. He was discharged, at Springfield, Illinois, June 14, 1864. On Christmas day of that year (1864), at Hartland, Me Henry County, Illinois, he married Sarah Ann Weaver, born June 3, 1848 at Seneca, Illinois. Sarah Ann was the daughter of John?s sister-in-law, Nancy DickersonWeaver. They had 6 children. Sarah Ann died, February 8, 1901, at RedCloud, Nebraska. David married twice more; first on May 10 and, second, June 20, 1908. He died October 10, 1915 at Red Cloud, Nebraska.
D. L. Groat, farmer and stock-raiser, residing on Section 32, Town 2,Range 12, Webster County, Nebraksa, was born in New York, in July, 1840, the fourth of a family of six children born to the union of John and Effie (Blakesley) Groat, both natives of the "Empire State," the former of Dutch descent. His father, a farmer by occupation, spent his youthful days in his native State and was married at the age of twenty-two years. When the subject of this sketch was about three years of age, his parents moved from New York to McHenry County, ILl., among the first settlers of that State. His father died here in 1854. His widow survived him twenty seven years, dying in Iowa in 1881. She wasa devout member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Out subject, D.L.Groat, was reared to maturity in Illinois, receiving a common school education. May 24, 1861, he entered the United States service, enlisted in Company A, Fifteenth Illinois Infantry Volunteers, Capt. L. D. Kelly, commander, in which he remained for three years, taking part in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth, siege of Vicksburg, besides many skirmishes. He was honorably discharged at Springfield, Ill., June 14, 1864. After his discharge from the army, he returned to home in Illinois, remaining there three years, and then going to Winneshick County, Iowa. Here he spent another three years, and then removed to Webster County, Neb., entering as a homestead the northeast quarter of Section 32, Town 2, Range 12. He arrived here in the fall of 1871, and in thespring of 1872 he broke land and put out a crop, and has raised a crop each year ever since. Five years ago he sold his homestead and purchased his present farm. He has been very successful since coming to Nebraska, and would not exchange his home here for one in any other State. In his political views, Mr. Groat inclines to the Repulican Party. He is a member of T. B. Blair Post No. 150, G.A.R., Riverton, Neb. In December, 1864, Mr. Groat was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Weaver, daughter of Peter and Nancy (Dickerson) Weaver, of McHenry County, Illinois, and by this union is the father of six children, viz.: Erminie, David A., Edwin, Elbert, Dora and MOrris, all of whom reside at home except David A.

D. L. Groat
D. L. Groat, a well known citizen of Webster county for forty-four years, passed away at his home in the south part of the city late Sundayafternoon after several weeks' illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Christian church conducted by Rev. Beebe assisted by Rev. Rummel.
David L. Groat was born in New York in 1840. When about three years of age he moved with his parents to Illinois. "Here he grew to manhood, received his education and enlisted in the Unites States army as a member of Company A, 15th Illinois Infantry. Three years of his life were spent as a soldier, during which he participated in engagements at Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg and many skirmishes. After receiving anhonorable discharge in 1869 he returned to Illinois, later removing to Iowa, where he remained until the fall of 1871, when he came to Nebraska and took a homestead in what is now Inavale precinct of this county.
The wife, three sons, and two daughters remain to mourn his loss. Hewill be greatly missed in the G.A.R. and other circles by a large number of friends.
