MAELRUANAIDH (-killed 901).
The Annals of Ulster record the death in 901 of "Mael Ruanaid son of Flann son of Mael Sechnaill, heir designate of Ireland" killed by “the Luigne i.e. by the sons of Cernachán son of Tadc and by the sons of Lorcán son of Cathal”.
m ---. The name of Maelruanaidh´s wife is not known. Maelruanaidh & his wife had two children:
(a) MAELSECHLAINN (-919 or 921). The Annals of the Four Masters record the death in 919 of “Maelseachlainn son of Maelruanaidh son of Flann”. The Annals of Ulster record the death in 921 of "Mael Sechnaill grandson of Flann, heir designate of Temair”.
(b) AEDH (-killed 949). The Annals of the Four Masters record that “Aedh son of Maelruanaidh, royal heir of Teamhair” was killed in 949 by “Domhnall son of Donnchadh”.

Maelrmacnaidh, son of Flann, son of Maelseachnaill, was killed (i.e. he was burned in a house set on fire), by the Luighne, i.e. by the sons of Cearnachan, son of Tadhg, and by the son of Lorcan, son of Cathal, lord of Meath. They also slew Maelcroin (the father of Caindelbhan), son of Domhnall, lord of Cinel Laeghaire; of which was said:
1. On a hard Wednesday I parted
with Maelrmacnaidh the nobly gifted,
On Thursday I began to think
on being without my father's son.
