This very ancient family, from whnch the chivalrous house of HERBEHT and other eminent houses sprang, derived originally in England from HERBERT, styled Count of Vermandois, who came over at the Conquest with the first WILLIAM, and filled the office of Chamberlain to the second, (WILLIAM RIFUS.) He is mentioned in the Battel Abbey Roll, and was rewarded by a grant of lands in Hampslure. His wife was Emma, dau. of Stephen, Earl of Blois, by Adela, dau. of WILLIAM the Conqueror, and by that lady he left a son and heir, HERBERT FITZ-HERBERT, called Herbert of Winchester, Chamberlain and Treasurer to King HENRY I., and the first of his family born in England. He m. Adela or Lucy, dau. and co-heir of Sir Robert Corbet, Knt., Lord of Alcester, ??. Warwick, and was father of HERBERT FITZ-HERBERT, who obtained from HENRY II. a confirmation of the landed possessions of his father, and likewise the office of Chamberlain. .... His great-grandson,
PETER FITZ-REGINALD, b. in 1273, (brother of John Fitz-Reginald, summoned to parliament as a Baron in 1294, and third son, by Joan, his wife, dau. and co-heir of William de Vivonia, Lord of Chewton, ??. Somerset, of Reginald Fitz-Peter, Lord of Blenlevenny, son of Peter Fitz-Herbert, Baron of Berstaple, ??. Devon, by Alice, his first wife, dau. of Robert Fitz-Roger, Lord of Warkworth and Clavering,) had a grant from his mother, Joan de Vivonia, of the manor of Clicuyton. or Chewton. He m. Alice, dau. and heir of Blethin Broadspcrc, Lord of Llanlowell, near Uske, in Monmouthshire, and had issue,
