    Note: 588 JOHN TUCHET, KNIGHT Commission of inquiry to John Daneys and John Fray. 30 Dec. 1408 [CPR 1408–13, p.67]. LINCOLN. Inquisition before John Fray. Sapperton. 18 Jan. 1409. He held the manor of Sapperton in his demesne as of fee and enfeoffed Thomas Tuchet, parson of Mackworth, and John Tuchet, clerk, with the intention that after his death they should enfeoff his heir in fee simple when he reached full age. If no heir reached full age they should enfeoff John, brother of Thomas, on condition that he took the name and arms of John Tuchet, knight. After the grant he continued to take the issues and profits to his own use. The manor is held in chief of the lady of Castle Bytham of the castle of Bytham by knight service, annual value 40s. He died on 19 Dec. last. James his son and heir is aged 10 years and more. 589 Lincoln. Inquisition ex officio. Grantham. 22 May 1409. John Tuchet, Lord Audley, held a rent of 55s.8d. from the manor of ‘Estehall’ in Sapperton in his demesne as of fee, and the reversion of the manor after the death of Thomas Leveryngton, who holds it for life by this rent. It is held of Alice widow of Robert Basset of Sapcote, knight, of the castle of Bytham Castle as an eighth part of a knight’s fee. Death as above. John his son, under age, is next heir. 590 BRISTOL. Inquisition before John Fray. 20 March 1409. He held no lands in Bristol. When he died, who is his next heir and of what age is unknown. 591 GLOUCESTER. Inquisition before John Fray. Badgeworth. 16 March 1409. He held a fourth part of the manor of Badgeworth in his demesne as of fee of the earl of Stafford by knight service, annual value £11 17s.1d. Date of death and heir as above [no.588]. 592 DEVON. Inquisition ex officio. Exeter. 9 Jan. 1409. John Twychet, knight, held the manor of West Raddon in his demesne as of fee of the earl of March of his manor of Marshwood Vale by knight service and suit of court twice yearly, annual value £8. Newport in Cemais in the Welsh March, half the castle and lordship, of the king in chief by knight service, annual value £34 and no more because destroyed by the Welsh rebels. Llandovery, in the March, a third part of the castle and lordship, of the prince by knight service, annual value £50 and no more because of invasion and destruction by the rebels of Wales. He held a fourth part of the manors of Broughton Gifford and Ashton Giffard in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief by knight service, annual values £9 10s. and 100s. John Twychet, knight, held in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief by knight service: Stowey, half the manor, annual value £10 6s.8d. Woolavington, half the manor, annual value £10 16s. Puriton and Downhead, half the manors, annual value £10 10s. Stockland Lovell, half the manor, annual value 70s. Honibere, half the manor, [value not stated]. He also held of the master of St. Mark’s, Bristol, certain lands in Woolston by knight service, annual value 10s. He died on 20 Dec. last. John Tuchet, knight, held half the manors of Stowey, Honibere, Woolavington, Puriton and Downhead, except for 1 messuage and 20 a. in Honibere, in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief by knight service as half a barony, annual value £61 17s.6 3/4d; half the manor of Stockland Lovell of the master of St. Mark’s, Bristol, by knight service, annual value 103s.4d; and the messuage and 20 a. in Honibere of Hugh Loterell by knight service, annual value 10s. Date of death and heir as above [no.593]. 599 SHROPSHIRE AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES. Inquisition before John Fray. Munslow. 26 Jan. 1409. He held in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief by knight service a third part of Red Castle with the lordship, annual value £22, a third part of the manor of Edgmond, annual value £21, half of the manor of Ford, annual value £19, and half the borough of Newport, annual value 9 marks. He formerly held the manor of Leegomery and enfeoffed Thomas, parson of Mackworth in Derbyshire, and John Tuchet, clerk, to hold in safety to his use and that of his heirs, that they might after his death enfeoff his heir when he reached full age. If he failed to reach full age they should enfeoff John brother of Thomas on condition that he took the name and arms of John Tuchet, knight. Thus the manor was held to his use and he had the issues. It is held of the castle and honour of Montgomery by knight service, being in the king’s ward owing to the minority of Edmund earl of March, annual value £40. Date of death and heir as above [no.593]. 600 RUTLAND. Inquisition before John Fray. Oakham. 14 Jan. 1409. He formerly held 2 parts of the manor and advowson of Ashwell in his demesne as of fee and the reversion of the third part after the death of Maud his mother who held in dower. He enfeoffed Thomas, parson of Mackworth in Derbyshire, and John Tuchet, clerk, in the two parts and reversion of the third, on the same conditions as in the last, with the addition that if John brother of Thomas died without heirs of his body they should found a hospital to pray for his soul and the souls of his ancestors and heirs. Ashwell is held of the prince of Wales of the honour of Chester by knight service, annual value £26. Maud died during his lifetime. Date of death and heir as above [no.593]. 601 DERBY. Inquisition before John Fray. Sandiacre. 21 Jan. 1409. He held the reversion of the manor of Morton in fee simple after the death of Maud his mother and granted it to Thomas Tuchet, parson of Mackworth, and John Tuchet, clerk, on the same conditions as above [nos.599–600]. Maud died during his lifetime, and he entered, took the profits to his use and died holding it. It is held of the prince of the honour of Chester by knight service, annual value 40 marks. Date of death and heir as above [no.593]. C 137/73, no.47 E 149/93/13, mm.3, 4 602 STAFFORD. Inquisition ex officio. Stone. 26 March 1409. He, who held elsewhere of the king in chief, held in his demesne as of fee: Betley, a third part of the borough. There are a third part of assize rents of 40s. payable at Lady Day and Michaelmas by equal parts, 2 watermills, annual value 26s.8d., and a third part of the toll of the borough, 2s.4d. As Lord Audley and of Heighley, by letters patent he granted an annuity of 40s. from the profits of the borough payable by the bailiffs by equal parts at Lady Day and Michaelmas to John son of James de Thikenes for life. Audley, half of a third part of the manor. There are assize rents of £6 6s.8d., and demesne lands, annual value 12s. both payable as above, a tallage worth 10s. at Martinmas, customary works at Lammas, 14 1/2d., a half of a third part of a mill, 10s., and half of the issues of the park there, 16s. By letters patent he granted an annuity of 40s. from Audley, payable as above, to John Hornynglowe for life. Horton and Endon, a third part of a third part of the manors. There are assize rents of £4 8s.10d. payable by equal parts at the Ascension and Martinmas, a third part of a third part of the enclosed pasture called Horton Lay, 13s.4d. at Midsummer and Martinmas, and a third part of a third part of 2 mills, 4s. As Lord Audley and of Heighley and Llandovery, by letters patent of 24 May 1408 he granted an annuity of 5 marks for life from these manors, payable by equal parts at Lady Day and Michaelmas to Henry Sherrard. Tunstall, a third part of a third part of the manor. In that part are assize rents of £4 payable by equal parts at Lady and Michaelmas, the service called tallage, 15s.6d. at Martinmas, customary works, 9s. payable at Candlemas and Lammas, the custom called ‘stuth’ every third year at Ascension, this being the second year, 26s.8d., a third part
