!NOTE: Afonso Teles de Meneses was a Castilian leader and commander of the Christian forces at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212; it was the greatest battle between Christians and Moslems on the Iberian Peninsula. He was a direct descendant of the Visigoth kings who lost the peninsula to the Moslems in 711 and 713, but in the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa he displayed great military talent. He "also practiced justice, magnanimity and love, the symbols of the golden shield of the Meneses." [LGuill] He built the border castle of Albuquerque at Mombeltran, Estremadura (Castile) in 1218. He was the Lord of Albuquerque, Valladolid, Meneses, Monte Alegre, and Medelim. He married in Castile and left descendants bearing his name in Cordova. [Based on Turton, p.44, this wife was Elvira Giron.] When his wife died, he came to Portugal, married the daughter of King Sancho I, and left three sons to carry on the Meneses name in Portugal.[LGuill] Letter dated FEB 1998 from Dr. James H. Guill.[Turton] "The Plantagenet Ancestry," by W. H. Turton
