=== Life Sketch ===
There is a lot of confusion concerning the wife of Richard Sawtell. He did NOT marry Elizabeth Kimball, daughter of Richard Kimball and Ursula scott, she died UNMARRIED 1675-1676.
From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sawtell-28
Disputed Origins
As of the 1972 article about Richard Sawtell in NEHGS' Register, his parents were not identified. He was probably from Somersetshire, and known siblings include:[1]
Thomas Sawtell, admitted freeman in Boston, 2 May 1649 and died there in 1651, childless and apparently unmarried. His will named his brother Richard.[2]
Anna who m. Kenrick; lived in Muddy River. (Savage disagrees.[3])
An online pedigree claims he was born/christened 4 April 1611 in High Ham, Somersetshire, and son of John Sawtell and Agnes Pittard.[4] There is also a christening (or birth) record for one Richard Sawtell (or Dolman), 7 Apr 1611 in Aller, Somerset, England.[5][6] However, there is no documentation to confirm that that Richard was the emigrant and settler in New England so parental links to those parents are not included in this profile.
Disputed Spouse
The 1972 NEHGR article names his wife only as "Elizabeth" and discusses no origins.
According to Torry, Richard Sautle and Elizabeth Pople marry in Watertown on Feb 5 1627/8. Torrey calls her "Elizabeth POPLE (-1694)" citing Watertown (Bond), p 424; Reg 46:149; Farr Anc. 239. A subsequent entry immediately following claims that the marriage of Richardus Sawtell and Elizabeth Pople took place at High Ham, Somersetshire 5 Feb 1627, citing Philimore : Somerset Mar. 1:58; Farr Anc. 236.[7][8] The chance of two Elizabeth Pople's and two Richard Sautle/Richardus Sawtell, marrying on different continents at almost the same date, are noted with the same death dates (1694), seems extremely unlikely. These odd and sequential entries do support confidence in the accuracy of this record.
A 1989 typescript genealogy appears to be the source for the High Ham, Somersetshire 5 Feb 1627 marriage. Unfortunately, no source is provided. A search for this record did uncover a transcribed record for the marriage, but the link to the original manuscript did not show the record. [9] As noted above, a marriage of a Richard and Elizabeth can also be found at freereg.org.uk.[10].
There has been no record uncovered proving the Elizabeth, Richard's wife in Watertown was the Elizabeth Pople married in High Ham. In addition, both his 1636/7 (single man's) land grant and the fact that his children did not appear until 1638 support the belief that the marriage of this Richard Sawtell had not occurred in High Ham in 1627.[11]
Research Notes
Warning: There are two SAR applications that incorrectly tie this man to a Richard Sawtell born in 1611 and married 1627 in High Ham, Somerset. They are inaccurate.[12][13]
Biography[14]
Note: The biography is presenting biographic information generally accepted. Please see above sections for discussions of disputed data, which is often included in online pedigrees.
Richard Sawtell was probably born in Somersetshire, England. His birth year is estimated from the fact that on 4 April 1671, Richard petitioned the court for release from military training presumably based on his advanced age. As able bodied men were liable for military service until the age of 60 [citation needed] , his birth is estimated at around 1610 (or 1611).
Richard arrived in Watertown, MA in 1636 (or 1639?)[15] [16] and as of 25 Jul [17]he was reported to be proprietor there; he stayed for more than 25 years[18]. He was granted only one acre of land and, as married men received much more[19][20], suggesting he was not with a wife at the time.
Richard moved to Groton MA[21][22] as an original proprietor and settler. He was quickly assigned to become the town clerk. He served in this office from 1662-1664. Richard's first child was born 1 May 1638, so it is thought he married after shortly after 28 Feb 1636.
In 1670 (or 1671) Richard and his wife took the illegitimate child of the deceased Zachariah Smith and their daughter Ruth Sawtelle into their home. [23] In 1672 he won £10 in a suit against Thomas, John and Joseph Smith for the child's keep out of the estate of the boy's father (in addition Richard charged them with illegally administering the estate) [24]
On 13 Mar 1676, during King Philip's war, Richard's Groton house, which was being used as one of the five garrison houses, was torched, and burned along with the rest of the town. The encompassing blaze drove Groton's inhabitants to desert their home.
Richard returned to Watertown, where in 1689 he became a selectman.[25]. There, he executed a will on 16 May 1692 [26]and died there about 21 Aug 1694. [27][28][29][30][31][32]. It is thought he was buried in the Old Burying Ground, in Groton, where his widow Elizabeth joined him soon after her death on 18 Oct 1694 [33][34][35].

=== Richard Sawtell first appears in New Eng ===
Richard Sawtell first appears in New England records 25 July, 1636 as a proprietor of Watertown, MA. He was probably from Somersetshire, England where the name seems to have orginated, but there is no proof to identify him with any particular town or family in England. He had a brother Thomas who was admitted freeman in 1649 and died in Boston in 1651, childless and apparently unmarried. In his will of 14 May 1651, proved 18 September, he referred to his brother Richard and a brother and sister Kenrick of Muddy River. This would presumably be John and Anna Kenrick of Muddy River. On 28 Feb 1636/7 at Watertown, the plowlands at "Beverbroke Planes" were divided and lotted out to the townsmen, allowing one acre per person and likewise for cattle valued at 20 lb. the head. Richard Sawtell was granted one acre, indicating that he was then a single man. Since his first child was born 1 May 1638, he obviously married about summer of 1637. His wife was probably the daughter of one of the middle aged proprietors living nearby. Richard Sawtell lived for more than 25 years at Watertown and then, with his sons Jonathan and Zachariah, became an original proprietor and settler of Groton, MA. He served as the first town clerk there, 1662-64. King Philip's War broke out in 1675, and Richard's home was one of the five garrison houses in Groton. This map of Watertown, Massachusetts, was brought to our attention in an email newsletter from the New England Historic Genealogical Society. The map shows the original allotments of land for Watertown, first settled in 1630.
In two previous posts, we learned about two of our early settlers of Watertown—John Whitney I and William Shattuck I. But we have more!
On this map, we find the original allotments of land for several of our ancestor families:
Kimball
Reynolds
Sawtel [Sawtell]
Shattuck
Tarball [Tarbell]
Whitney
To the lower left, we find Whitney’s Hill.
The family name How appears on several of the lots, perhaps related to our Howes of Sudbury and Marlborough, Massachusetts, although none of our Howes are known to have been in Watertown.
Richard Kimball (1596–1675) and Ursula Scott (1597–1661) are 11th great-grandparents of MKS in the Watne branch.
Jonathan Sawtell (1639–1690) and Mary Tarbell (1645–1676) are 9th great-grandparents of MKS in the Wetherbee branch.
Richard Sawtell (1611–1694) and Elizabeth Pople (1611–1694) are 10th great-grandparents of MKS in the Wetherbee branch.
William Shattuck I (1661–1672) and Susanna NN (1620–1686) are 11th great-grandparents of MKS in the Watne branch.
John Whitney I (1588–1673) and Eleanor NN (Whitney) (1599–1659) are 10th great-grandparents of MKS in the Wetherbee branch, and 12th great-grandparents of MKS in the Watne branch.
John Whitney II (1621–1692) and Ruth Reynolds (1623–1662) are 11th great-grandparents of MKS in the Watne branch.
=== Biography ===
Biography
Richard Sawtell (Sawtle/Sartwell,etc.) was probably from Somerset, England where the name is numerous, but no proof of this has been established. He had a brother, Thomas, who was admitted Freeman 2 May 1649 at Boston and died there in 1651 childless and apparently unmarried. Thomas's will of 14 May 1651 refers to brother Richard and brother and sister Kenrick of Muddy River. These are possibly John and Ann of Muddy River, now Brookline, but Savage says that Ann Kenrick was probably sister of Robert Smith; she died 15 Nov 1656. Richard administered the estate of brother Thomas. "Richard Sawtell of Watertown - Addenda," pg. 79, English Origins of New England Families CD, Series 2 Vol. 2 names Richard as son of John & Agnes (Pittard) but no son Thomas or daughter Ann are mentioned.
Watertown Founders Monument
Watertown Founders Monument
He is listed on Watertown Founders Monument, commemorating the first settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts. The town was first known as Saltonstall Plantation, one of the earliest of the Massachusetts Bay Colony settlements. Founded in early 1630 by a group of settlers led by Richard Saltonstall and George Phillips, it was officially incorporated that same year. The alternate spelling "Waterton" is seen in some early documents.
Richard's name first appears in New England records as a proprietor of Watertown, MA 25 July 1636.
On 28 Feb 1637 at Watertown, the plowlands at Beverbroke Plains were divided and allotted out to townsmen, one acre per person and likewise for cattle vaued at 20 pounds per head. Richard was granted one acre, indicating that he was a single man. Since his first child was born 1 May 1638, he was likely married in the summer of 1637.
=== Burning of Groton ==- Richard lived at Watertown for more than 25 years and then, with sons Jonathan and Zacharish, became an original proprietor and settler of Groton, Massachusetts. He served as the first town clerk there, 1662-1664. King Philip's War broke out in 1675 and Richard's home, one of the 5 garrison houses in Groton, was burned on 13 Mar. 1676. Richard and most of the others, including his sons, returned to Watertown where he lived the remainder of his life. He served as a Selectman in Watertown in 1689.
Richard's Will
Richard's will is dated 16 May 1692 and he died "aged man" 21 Aug 1694. His estate was valued at 147 pounds, 11 shillings; real estate was located at Watertown except for a 20 acre right at Groton. ("Richard Sawtell of Watertown, MA," NEHGS "Register," Vol 126, pg. 3)

Biography[15]
Note: The biography is presenting biographic information generally accepted. Please see above sections for discussions of disputed data, which is often included in online pedigrees.
Richard Sawtell was probably born in Somersetshire, England. His birth year is estimated from the fact that on 4 April 1671, Richard petitioned the court for release from military training presumably based on his advanced age. As able bodied men were liable for military service until the age of 60 [citation needed] , his birth is estimated at around 1610 (or 1611).
Richard arrived in Watertown, MA in 1636 (or 1639?)[16] [17] and as of 25 Jul [18]he was reported to be proprietor there; he stayed for more than 25 years[19]. He was granted only one acre of land and, as married men received much more[20][21], suggesting he was not with a wife at the time.
Richard moved to Groton MA[22][23] as an original proprietor and settler.
[24] In 1672 he won £10 in a suit against Thomas, John and Joseph Smith for the child's keep out of the estate of the boy's father (in addition Richard charged them with illegally administering the estate) [25]
On 13 Mar 1676, during King Philip's war, Richard's Groton house, which was being used as one of the five garrison houses, was torched, and burned along with the rest of the town. The encompassing blaze drove Groton's inhabitants to desert their home.
Richard returned to Watertown, where in 1689 he became a selectman.[26]. There, he executed a will on 16 May 1692 [27]and died there about 21 Aug 1694. [28][29][30][31][32][33]. It is thought he was buried in the Old Burying Ground, in Groton, where his widow Elizabeth joined him soon after her death on 18 Oct 1694 [34][35][36].

He was probably from Somersetshire, England where the name is numerous, but no proof of this has been established. Richard lived at Watertown for more than 25 years and then, with sons Jonathan and Zacharish, became an original proprietor and settler of Groton, MA. Richard's will is dated 16 May 1692 and he died "aged man" 21 Aug 1694. His estate was valued at 147 pounds, 11 shillings; real estate was located at Watertown except for a 20 acre right at Groton. Note: Disputed Origins
