=== Life Sketch ===
We are unusually lucky to have a birth, marriage, and death record for Elizabeth, as well as birth records for most of her children. It appears that Elizabeth lived her life in Watertown (her father lived in both Watertown and Groton but didn't move to Groton until after Elizabeth married.) She was the oldest known child of Benjamin Crisp and his wife Bridget. Benjamin was known to be in Watertown by about 1631. For many years Benjamin had a seven acre parcel in town (a home stall) which he kept until 1666. See map of early Watertown under Memories of her father's lot; likely where Elizabeth grew up.
Watertown, first known to settlers as Saltonstall Plantation, was one of the earliest of the Massachusetts Bay Colony settlements. Founded in early 1630 by a group of settlers led by Richard Saltonstall and George Phillips, it was officially incorporated that same year.
Elizabeth has a birth record in Watertown, 8 January 1636/7. See attached under Sources. I think she was the 26th birth listed in Watertown.
Elizabeth also has an attached marriage record.
Elizabeth's husband George was an early settler of Watertown, and information about this settler can be found in Henry Bond's "Genealogies of the families and descendants of the early settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts," (attached under Sources; see page 331.) He married in 1657 Elizabeth Crispe. They had a large family together - 12 children all born in Watertown:
1. Elizabeth - 30 Jan 1658
2. Judith - 12 Mar 1660
3. Hannah - 24 Mar 1661
4. John - 25 Mar 1664
5. Benjamin - 2 Mar 1666
6. Daniel - twin to Benjamin
*7. George - 4 Jun 1668 - married Mary Hememway
8. Mary - 11 Dec 1671
9. Sarah - no birth record but is listed as Sarah Rider in her father's probate documents. Married 1689 to Thomas Rider.
10. Mercy - no birth record but is listed as Mercy Baker in her father's probate records. Married about 1690 to William Baker.
11. Martha - no birth record but is listed as Martha Dix in her father's probate documents. Married 1697 to John Dix.
12. Grace - 2 June 1680
Mercy wasn't included in Henry Bond's original list, but was added later by a researcher.
Elizabeth died 28 May 1691. See attached death record. She was about 54.
George married a younger woman, another Elizabeth, in 1691 and had three more children.
Almost all of Elizabeth's children lived to adults, including a set of twins, which is quite remarkable. Her son John was the only known child who didn't live to adulthood. He was tragically killed in an accident when he was ten. He was her oldest son and this must have been a hard blow.
The old Watertown Burying ground is the oldest cemetery in Watertown (also known as Arlington Street Cemetery) and it is possible Elizabeth was buried there, but no headstone exists.
In the year 1675 King Philip's War broke out between the Indians and the New England settlers. March 2, 1676, Groton was attacked and most of the village burned. Soon after, Groton was deserted for the period of about two years. Elizabeth had two brothers who served in the conflict. Her mother died around this time as well. Her father returned to Watertown from Groton and died there. Elizabeth's sister Deliverance was killed in another Indian attack on Groton in 1694, shortly after Elizabeth's death. Sadly, almost all of Deiverance's family including her husband and almost all of her children were killed in this attack. It looks like two of Deliverance's children and one step-daughter were taken captive; one of the children died very soon after, two were carried off. One daughter entered a Canadian convent and never returned, and a son was ransomed some time later.
Elizabeth was the grandmother of 99 grandchildren. Her husband, who had three additional children with a second wife, had at least 107 grandchildren.
It doesn't appear that any of her brothers were able to have a family. One of her brothers had an illegitimate daughter, it appears, but Elizabeth's father, Benjamin, does not appear to have any sons who passed on the "Crisp" name. Her brother Zachariah appears to have been in trouble a few times; in addition to the illegitimate daughter he was indicted in 1675 for murder, but later found not guilty. It is this lack of male heirs which I believe has led to a relatively few published items about this family. Robert Charles Anderson in The Great Migration mentioned the book, The ancestry of Sarah Hildreth, 1773-1857 : wife of Annis Spear of Litchfield, Maine by Davis, Walter Goodwin, 1885-1966 as one of the few books mentioning the Crisp family. This source also, unfortunately, has several large mistakes, including the number of children Elizabeth had, and who Elizabeth's sister Mary married. For a little bit better reference, see the article in The American Genealogist 1987 (attached under Sources).
