Agnes
- Preferred Name: Agnes [1] [2] [3]
- Alternate Name: Agnes Lane
- Gender: F
- FSID: KL4X-NLM
- Death: BEF 28 FEB 1651 in Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America at LATI: N2.3028 LONG: E71.068 with note: Remarkably, the a death date of the 3rd of April, 1671, has been here for over 10yrs!! Only Kenneth L. Shelley (in June of 2022) questioned it, but he did not remove it. This date appears to be a complete fabrication. MA vitals were generally checked & both sets Hingham vitals were specifically checked.... & no death for Agnes Lane.
This makes perfect sense, since, William Lane of Dorchester, made his mark on his Last Will & Testament, the 28th of February ("12th month", old style calendar), 1650-51 (old/new style calendar), & his wife Agnes is NOT mentioned. She died before this date at Dorchester, which is where she & William had lived since their emigration from England.
Suffolk County began 10 May 1643 to which Hingham belonged on this date.
- Birth: ABT 1584 in England with note: William Lane has children baptized in Beaminster, Dorsetshire, which is nowhere near Norfolkshire. Norfolkshire is used because an inordinate number of settlers at HINGHAM, Ma, were from this county in England. That does NOT mean this is where Agnes & William were from. In all probability, William & Agnes were from Dorsetshire, but in the absence of proof, England is a safe bet. Circa 1584.... well why not.....?
FamilySearch standard for circa date prefixes is
to spell them fully in lower case – no abbreviations.
- Notes:
They were never at Salem, MA. Dorchester is their known 1st residence as Agnes is a member of the church there in 1636-37.
They arrived on the "Hopewell" in late May or early June, 1635.

UNPROVEN MAIDEN SURNAME: PLEASE REVIEW
Agnes _____, second wife of William Lane
(1) Origin, maiden surname, parents, & death data for Agnes, wife of William Lane, not verifiably identified unlikely Duke, Farnsworth, Waker, Bagot or Cattell (see discussion item). View biographical items in story (Memories) for this record.
(2) Biographical sketch about William Lane in outstanding historical series "THE GREAT MIGRATION...," by Robert Charles Anderson Marriage abt 1606, Agnes _____....William Lane's wife is identified as Agnes Farnsworth in some secondary sources [Bassett-Preston 169]. The only justification for this is the provision in William Lane's Will that "my loving brethren Joseph Farnsworth & John Wiswall" be executors. Since both men are referred to as brothers, this must indicate a church relationship.
"THE GREAT MIGRATION...," by Robert Charles Anderson (See source attached to this record and Story (Memories) attached to the record of William Lane,. 9Q7L-659.
William Lane married by 1606 Agnes ?. They had 7 children Avis Lane Lincoln, William, Andrew, George, Mary Lane Long Farnsworth Wilcox, Sarah Lane Baker, Elizabeth Lane Rider.
On 20 March 1634/5, "George Land, his servant, 22 years," and "Sarah Land, his kinswoman, 18 years," were included in the passenger list of the Mary Gould, in the family of Angel Hollard, sailing for New England from Weymouth, Dorsetshire [Hotten 285]. No records appear in New England for these passengers under the surname Land. They are very likely children of William Lane.
