4. FHL film 929.273 ST71w "Stone – Gregg Genealogy; the Ancestors and Descendants of Galen Luther Stone and his wife Carrie Morton Gregg," by Alicia Crane Williams (Baltimore; 1987), pp. 65-67:
"JOHN BEAL was born in England, probably in or near Wymondham, co. Norfolk; and died at Hingham, Massachusetts 1 April 1688. His death was noted by David Hobart, "my Uncle John Beal died suddenly": and by Judge Sewell, "Father Beal of Hingham dies, aet. 100 yrs." ("Hingham History," 2:53).
He married first, in Wymondham, co. Norfolk, England, FRANCES RIPPLY, a sister to William Ripley who also came to New England in 1638, probably in the same ship with the Beal family. William Ripley made a deed of gift to Nathaniel Beal. No relationship is given in the deed, but it seems practically certain that Nathaniel Beal (born supposedly in 1629) was the youngest son and child of Frances ("The American Genealogist," 13:262-4).
He married second, at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England, 13 July 1630, NAZARETH (HOBART) TURNER, widow of Robert Turner and daughter of Edmund and Margaret (Dewey) Hobart, baptized at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England, 7 June 1601; died in Hingham, Mass., 23 September 1658. She married first, at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England, 9 November 1626, Robert Turner, who was buried there 7 April 1627 (TAG 13:263). Nasareth was the sister of Rev. Peter Hobart, minister to the settlers of Hingham, Massachusetts. For more information on the Hobart Family, see "History of Hingam," 2:334.
He married third, at Hingham, 10 March 1659, MARY (GILMAN) JACOB, daughter of Edward Gilman of Hingham, co. Norfolk, and widow of Nicholas Jacob. She died in Hingham, 15 June 1681. For more information on the Gilman family, see TAG 11:137-139.
John Beal was probably a first cousin to the John Beal "Jr." of Hingham whose will of 26 October 1657 mentions his father Edmund and some of the children of John Beal senior who are called "cousins." The baptisms of six children of Edmund and Susan (Wright) Beales is recorded at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England. From the marriage dates of Edmund and John Beal Sr. it would appear that they were probably brothers (definitely not father and son as given by Charles Pope in "Pioneers of Massachusetts").
The following record concerning the arrival of John Beal and his family was made by Daniel Cushing the fourth town clerk of Hingham, Mass.: "1638 John Beal, shoemaker, with his wife and five sons and three daughters and two servants, came from Old Hingham and settled in New Hingham."
On 18 September 1638 John received a grant of land containing six acres on what is now South Street at or near the corner of Hersey Street. He was admitted a freeman in 1639 and in 1649 and 1659 was chosen to represent the town at the General Court of the Colony. In his will of 27 September 1687, John names his children (John is the eldest son) and grandchildren, giving legacies to each.

=== When John, the tenth child of Edward Be ===
When John, the tenth child of Edward Beales, brought the name to North America he changed the spelling to "Beal." It wasn't until he had reached the age of 50 that he took up the challenge of leaving his homeland to become a pioneer in a strange new country. He came from Hingham, Norfolk Co., England and arrived in Boston on the vessel "Diligent" on August 10, 1638. He brought with him his wife, Nazareth, five sons, three daughters and two servants. (One of the servants may have been his brother Edmond's son also named John). They settled in Hingham MA which is a few miles southeast of Boston. John was on doubt well aware of the new settlement. Ralph Smith had come from Hingham Eng. in 1633 and founded Hingham MA. Additionally his wife's parents and family had arrived in Charlestown MA the same year and her brother, Rev. Peter Hobart was the first minister of Hingham. Not long after arrival John Beal became a landholder obtaining a grant of six acres for a house lot on what is now the south side of South Street west of Hersey Street. On the 13th of March 1639, he was admitted to the freedom of Massachusetts Colony and thus became a "freeman". He was deputy to the general court in 1640 and 1659. He was a shoemaker, a trade that seems to have been passed down to succeeding generations. John Beal died at the age of 100.

=== Bill Sweet's Genealogy Page John Beal th ===
Bill Sweet's Genealogy Page John Beal the projenitor of the large family bearing his name, and dwelling in Hingham, Cohasset, Weymouth and Abingont, came from the parish of Hingham in Forehoe Hundred, in the county of Norfolk, England, which is situated about fourteen miles west-southwest of Norwich, the shire town, and about ninety-eight north-east of London., He came in a vessel called the "Diligente," of which John Martin was master, arriving at Boston on the tenth of August, 1638. Daniel Cushing, one of the early town clerks of Hingham, who also came to New England in the above named vessel, in a manuscript list of the early settlers of Hingham, which has fortunately been preserved, says of him: "John Bealke, shoe-maker, with his wife and 5 sons and 3 daughters and 2 servants, came from Old Hingham and settled in New Hingham." Perhaps the inducement that led Mr. Beal to select Hingham as a place of abode was, that his wife, Nazareth, was daughter of Edmund Hobart, and consequently sister of Rev. Peter Hobart, the first minister of that town, who had chosen that place for his labors a few years previous. The five sons and three daughters of Mr. Beal who were brough over from England were, Martha, Mary, Sarah, John, Nathaniel, Jeremiah, Joshua and Caleb. Two other children, Rebecca and Jacob, were born in America. Not long after his settlement at Hingham he became a landowner, as may be inferred from the following entry taken from the town's book of grants of land: "Given unto John Beal for a house lot, 6 acres of land butting upon the town street northward, and upon the common southward, bounded with the land of Jonas Austin eastward, and with the land of Thomas Hobart westward." The site of this home lot can easily be pointed out on the south side of the present South Street (which was the ancient Town Street), and west of Hersey Street, which was laid out through Mr. Austin's original lot. On the 13th of March succeeding his arrival, Mr. Beal was admitted to the freedom of the Massachusetts Colony, by taking the customary freeman's oath, which he did at the same time with several of his fellow townsmen; and in 1649, in company with Nicolas Jacob, he represented the town of Hingham in the General Court of the Colony. Mr. Beal lived to a good old age; for under date of April 1st, 1688, Judge Sewall noted in his diary: "Father Beal of Hingham dies at 100," and David Hobart wrote under the same date in a Hobart Journal, "My uncle John Beale died suddenly in his garden". gramagoton@aol.com jmorgan@discover.net MrcsM25@aol.com LSpel177000@aol.com

Perhaps the inducement that led Mr. Beal who were brought over from England were, Martha, Mary, Sarah, John, Nathaniel, Jeremiah, Joshua and Caleb. Two other children, Rebecca and Jacob, were born in America. Not long after his settlement at Hingham he became a landowner, as may be inferred from the following entry taken from the town's book of grants of land: "Given unto John Beal for a house lot, 6 acres of land butting upon the town street northward, and upon the common southward, bounded with the land of Jonas Austin eastward, and with the land of Thomas Hobart westward." The site of this home lot can easily be pointed out on the south side of the pres ent South Street (which was the ancient Town Street), and west of Hersey Street, which was laid out through Mr. Mr. Beal lived to a good old age; for under date of April 1st, 1688, Judge Sewall noted in his diary: "Father Beal of Hingham dies at 100," and David Hobart wrote under the same date: "My Uncle John Beal died suddenly." FTM CD113, Savage's Gen. Dict. of Early Settlers in New England, pg 406: John, Hingham, a shoemaker from old Hingham Co., Norfolk, came with wife, five sons, three daughters and two servants in the Diligent, 1638, from London. Admitted Freeman 13 Mar. 1639, had Jacob, bapt. 2 Oct 1642, and no other children perhaps here, except Rebecca who d. unmarried aft Oct . 1657. He was a representative 1649. and his wife Nazareth d. 23 Sept. 1658, but he took second wife 10 Mar. 1659, Mary, widow of Nicholas Jacob, d. 1688 (as Sewall in his diary, sub. 1 Apr. mentions), in his 100th year, though perhaps the report may not have been exact. FTM CD113, Abridge Compendium, by Frederick Virkus, pg 967: BEAL (Beale, Beall, Beals), John (1588-1688), from Eng. in the "Diligente," to Hingham, Mass., 1638; freeman, 1639; dep. Gen. Ct., 1649-59; m Nazareth Hobart (d 1658); m 2d, 1659, Mary, widow of Nicholas Jacob. FTM CD113, John Beal, by Clark, 1987: Family History: 217 Genealogy Books The History of Hingham, Massachusetts, published in 1893 by the Town has on pages 53 through 77 of Volume II, the Genealogy of the BEAL Family, as known in the year of publication. Since 1893 much information has been found and it has been possible to correct the Genealogy of JOHN BEAL, the immigrant, and to extend his line i n England to 1568. A Mormon seeking his ancestry in Norfolk County, England, for inclusion in his Church records, found the baptismal date for JOHN BEAL in a small parish adjacent to Wymondham. The parish register included two marriages and the first name of the third wife and the baptismal date of his father's 19 children. These records were included in the 1976 LDS Computer File Index where I found them. Clarence Almon Torrey listed extracts from the parish records of Wymondham in the American Genealogist (volume number not known). He showed the marriage of JOHN BEALES to Frances Ripley in Wymondham on 11 June 1616. His article was titled 'JOHN BEAL'S First Wife'. Mr. Torrey also listed the marriage.of JOHN BEAL to NAZARETH TURNER in Hingham on 13 July 1630. NAZARETH (HOBART) TURNER was the widow of Robert Turner who was buried 7 April 1627 after a marriage of a few months. (Deaths were not recorded in parish registers but burials were as the latter was the responsibility of a clergyman). It should be noted at this time that the BEAL Family name has been recorded in many variations in spelling. JOHN was baptized as BEALES in Wramplingham, married as BEALE in Wymondham and as BEAL in Hingham. His descendants in the States have been recorded as Beal, Beale, Beales, Beals, Beel, Bell, Beall, Bealls, etc. JOHN BEAL (l), the ancestor and progenitor of all those of the name of BEAL dwelling in Hingham, Cohasset, Scituate, Weymouth, Abington and other towns in the vicinity, was born in 1588, and came from the Parish of Hingham in Forehoe Hundred in the County of Norfolk, England, which is situated about 14 miles west-southwest of Norwich, the shire town, and about 98 miles northeast of London. He and his family came to America in the vessel called the "Diligent" of Ipswich, of which Mr. John Martin was Master, arriving at Boston 10 August 1638. There were 133 passengers on the "Diligent". Daniel Cushing, one of the early town clerks of Hingham and who also c ame to New England in the above named vessel states in a preserved manuscript list of the early settlers of Hingham, that "John Beale, shoemaker, with his wife and five sons and three daughters and two servants, came from old Hingham and settled in new Hingham". It is assumed that one of the servants was a woman to help care for the children and the other was a nephew, John Beal, Jr., son of Edmund Beal who was a younger brother of JOHN BEAL (l), the shoemaker. John Beal, Jr., was probably an apprentice in the art of shoemaking. It was a common practice in England in the 1600's to apprentice sons and daughters to relatives to learn a trade or profession. Shoemaking was a paying profession in the 1600's and 1700's and John may well have chosen it. (There has been some confusion among genealogists and family historians about the John Beal who died in Hingham, Mass. in 1657. In his will which was probated on 28 July 1658, he infers that he was unmarried and made bequests to his father, who never came over to this country, and to his cousins, the children of JOHN BEAL (l). His father was Edmund Beal who is shown in the Parish Register of Hingham Norfolk County, England, as marrying Susan Wright on 14 December 1619. Perhaps the inducement that led JOHN BEAL (l) to select Hingham, America. as a place of abode was the fact that his second wife, NAZARETH, was the daughter of EDMUND HOBART who had settled in America in 1633. Also her brother Reverend Peter Hobart had sailed to America and landed in September 1635. In 1638, not long after his settlement at Hingham, JOHN BEAL (l) became a land holder, as may be inferred from the following entry taken from the town's book of grants of land: "Given unto JOHN BEAL for a house lot six acres of land butting upon the Town Street northward, and upon the Common southward, bounded with the land of Jonas Austin, (another record says Farrar Austin), eastward and with the land of Thomas Hobart westward.' The site of this home lot ca n easily be pointed out on the south side of the present South Street (which was the ancient Town Street) and west of Hersey Street, which was laid out through Mr. Austin's original lot. On 13 March 1639 JOHN BEAL (l) was admitted a freeman of the Massachusetts Colony by taking the customary freeman's oath. He did this at the same time as several of his fellow townsmen. In 1649 in company with Mr. Nicholas Jacob, he represented the Town of Hingham in the General Court of the Colony. He was also a Representative in 1659. His Wife NAZARETH died 23 September 1658 at Hingham, Massachusetts. On 10 March 1659, he married Mary the widow of his old friend, Nicholas Jacob, who had died on 5 June 1657. By this wife he had no children. She died 15 May 1681. David Hobart, NAZARETH'S nephew, continued his father's diary and recorded the event, although the town records state that, "Mary Beal, wife of JOHN BEAL, SR. (l), died on 15 June 1681." JOHN BEAL (l) lived to a good old age for under date of 1 April 1688, one Judge Sewall noted in his diary, "Father Beal of Hingham died at age 100" and David Hobart wrote under the same date, "My Uncle John Beal died suddenly". (LDS records show JOHN BEAL to be 95 years of age as his documented date of christening was registered 8 May 1593). A note from John D. Beal, Jr., Beal Genealogist, dated 2 March 1983, stated the following: About 1850, the Town of Hingham widened Main Street opposite the "Old Ship Church" and discontinued the cemetery for our early settlers. The gravestones were given to descendants and the remains moved to a plot in the main cemetery. The town erected a pyramidal column and dedicated it to "Our Early Settlers." No record has been found of the inscriptions of the stones given away.

- Title: Rebeckah Paine et al. in the Boston Evening Transcript genealogical column
Author: Boston Evening Transcript, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States of America. Genealogical column. 3 December 1919, 29 December 1919, and 19 January 1920. Godfrey Memorial Library.
Publication: Name: https://www.familysearch.org/photos/artifacts/127516791;
Note: (7831.) 1. Paine, Hunt, Thayer. I shall feel thankful if any of your contributors can and will give me the pedigree of Rebeckah Paine, born in Braintree, Mass., about 1740 or 1741; died there about 1782; or the names of any of her descendants. She married, in Braintree, intentions Jan. 23, 1758-59, John (5) Hunt (John 4, Colonel Ephraim 3, Ephraim 2, Enoch 1, the immigrant). He was born in Braintree, July 9, 1737, died in Belchertown, 1813. Mr. Hunt married, second, intentions March 8, 1783, Mary Thayer, probably of Braintree, and soon after removed with his family to Belchertown, where he established a home. There were nine children born of the first marriage and one by the second, to wit: Ruth, Seth, John, Abner, Lydia, Rebecca, Rachel, Sarah, Jabez and Mary. Seth married Sarah Lamb of Randolph; Abner married Dimmis Root of Belchertown; Lydia married John Belding; Rebecca married, first Isaac Foster of Greenfield, and second Abijah Scovil of Ontario County, N. Y.; Rachel married Roswell Dickinson, and Sarah married Joseph Dickinson of Amherst. I shall also be glad to receive the lineage of Mary Thayer.
2. Foster, Thorp, White. John (4) Foster (Jacob 3, Isaac 2, Reginald 1), born in Ipswich, Mass., baptized Sept. 11, 1702; died in Bernardstown (Burk's Fort), about 1758; removed with father to Lebanon, Conn., in 1718; married, Aug. 26, 1724, Abigail Thorp, daughter of Peter and Abigail (White, not Abigail Higley, as erroneously given in Pierce's "Foster Genealogy") Thorp; she died probably at Lebanon about 1740. Soon after he, with his two sons, Isaac and Ezekiel, removed to Deerfield, Mass., and later was at Bernardstown. I will be very glad to get the pedigree of Peter Thorp and of Abigail White, who came to Lebanon from Dedham, Mass. John Foster enlisted in the colonial military service, and was known as Sergeant Foster. I should be glad to know whether or not he married a second wife or had children other than Isaac and Ezekiel.

*7831. 1. Paine, Hunt, Thayer. W. E. F., Dec. 3, 1919. Braintree records do not give the birth of Rebecca Paine, who married 1758, John (5) Hunt. She may have been of the family of that mysterious Priscilla Paine who married, Jan. 5, 1743-4, at Hingham, Joshua (5) Beal (Andrew 4, Jeremiah 3, 2, John 1).
2. Foster, White. Thorp. Peter Thorp, son of James and Hannah, was born at Dedham, Jan. 30, 1663. Peter Thorp and Abigail White were married at Dedham, Oct. 29, 1695.

*7831. 1. Paine, Hunt, Thayer, Dec. 22, 1919. I feel very thankful to H. E. T. and to A. F. T. C. for answer in Transcript, giving so much information regarding Mary (Thayer) Hunt, born 1763, wife of John (5) Hunt, born 1737. If the information is available would like to get the correct data and place of death of both John and Mary (Thayer) Hunt. I am, however, still more eager to ascertain the true lineage of Rebecca (Paine) Hunt, the first wife of said John (5) (John 4, Ephraim 3, Ephraim 2, Enoch 1) Hunt.
