=== Life Sketch ===
“Widow Harding” was assessed 9s in the tax list for Plymouth on 25 Mar. 1633.(3) Martha died in 1633 in Plymouth and left an estate worth only £20. 18s. 6d. She left the care of her young son Joseph to Dea. John Done who also probably took care of John as well:
“John Done presented an inventory of the goods & chattels of Martha Harding, deceased, who, in the behalf of her son, was allowed the administrator of the said Martha.” (1)

The “Suma” at the end of the tabulation concerns the debts which she still owed from her husband. It appears that she owed £33.9s.1d. so her estate was insolvent. Given the joyners tools in the inventory I suspect that was her husbands trade. Why were they so much in debt? It doesn’t appear that they owned any property to explain the debt. They owed money to folks in England. Was this for their transportation over here? Some of the debt seems to be to his brother in England. Too bad they didn’t write down their names and where they lived! Joseph and Martha both died so young… leaving two little boys orphans… a sad story and one I would love to know more about.
Much of this document is difficult to read. I am usually quite good at deciphering 17th century hand writing, however, this one is a challenge! So I've uploaded the original record… have a go at it! If anyone can figure out the rest of the document, let me know as perhaps it will fill in some holes in the information on this family.

Born by about 1612, based on estimated date of marriage (and probably some years earlier). Came to Plymouth Colony with her infant son in 1632. Died in Plymouth between 25 March 1633 (tax assessment) and 28 October 1633 (administration of estate).
Married by about 1632 _____ Harding, who presumably died in England before his widow and son sailed for New England.
Their only known child: JOSEPH, b. by 1632; m. Eastham 4 April 1660 Bethiah Cooke, daughter of JOSIAS COOKE .
It is likely that Martha Harding was sister to JOHN DOANE , who administered her estate and took her son, Joseph, into his household after her death. Joseph Harding was complained of on 3 June 1652 for "carrying an Indian's gun unto the smith to be mended in his uncle's name," and it is assumed by some that the uncle mentioned here would be JOHN DOANE .

Martha DOANE taxed at Plymouth 1632-3, died in 1633 in Plymouth, had brother John who cared for her sons Joseph & John
Spouse: Joseph HARDIN, died 1630, in Maine with Gorges as early as 1623, when settlement abandoned went to Plymouth, Braintree, Cape Cod (If married 1624 Duxbury per NE Marriages then some children could not be Martha's)
Children: John; Joseph born circa 1630-2, of Braintree & Eastham, married Bethia Cook daughter of Josiah; Phoebe married John Brown 1634; Winifred married Thomas Whiton 1639;
The Great Migration Begins: ASSOCIATIONS: MARTHA HARDING ORIGIN: Unknown MIGRATION: 1632 FIRST RESIDENCE: Plymouth ESTATE: 'Widow Harding' was assessed 9s. in the Plymouth tax list of 25 March 1633 [PCR 1:11]. On 28 October 1633 'John Done presented an inventory of the goods & chattels of Martha Harding, deceased, who, in the behalf of her son, was allowed the administrator of the said Martha' [PCR 1:18]. The inventory totalled £20 18s. 6d. and included no real estate [MD 1:82-3, citing PCPR I :8]. The estate showed disbursements to 'her husband's brothers in England, to one eight pounds to another nine pounds to another three pounds"; "This Martha Harding died without will leaving one son in the custody of Mr. Joh Done the administrator of the said Martha..." [MD I :83, citing PCPR 1:9). BIRTH: By about 1612 based on estimated date of marriage (and probably some years earlier). DEATH: Plymouth berween 25 March 1633 (tax assessment) and 28 October 1633 (administration ofestate). MARRIAGE: By about 1632 Harding, who presumably died in England before his widow and son sailed for New England. CHILD: 1 JOSEPH, b . by 1632; m. Eastham 4 April 1660 Bethiah Cooke [PCR 8:27], daughter ofJOSIAS COOKE It is likely that Martha Harding was sister to JOHN DOANE, who administered her estate and took her son, Joseph, into his household after her death. Joseph Harding was complained of on 3 June 1652 for "carrying an Indian's gun unto the smith to be mended in his uncle's name" [PCR 3: I 0], and it is assumed by some that the uncle mentioned here would be JOHN DOANE. COMMENTS: There were others by the name of Harding in early Plymouth, but with no obvious connection to Martha Harding: John. b. by 1627 (in Duxbury section of 1643 Plymouth list of men able to bear arms [PCR 8: 190]); Phebe who married 26 March 1633 John Brown [PCR 1:26]; and Winifred who married 22 November 1639 Thomas Whiton [PCR 1:134].
Gen Reg of the First Settlers of NE; HARDING, JOHN, MA, freeman 1640, may have been the representative of Medfield in 1689.
Families of Robinson Ancestors (1957): After the DeGorges party arrived in America, there were listed among the passengers, Richard Harding and infant son, John Harding and two young sons, and Joseph Harding. These three brothers, Richard, John and Joseph, were cousins of Lady Georges. //P// The children of John Harding were: Richard b. circa 1580 d. circa 1657, married (2) Elizabeth Adams. Joseph died 1630 m. 1624 Martha Doane.
Genealogical and personal history of the Allegheny Valley ..., Volume 3: There were in Massachusetts before the year 1650 six immigrants of the name of Harding. Abraham who left many descendants in Medford and the vicinity. George of Salem nothing more being known of him. John of Weymouth. Robert of Boston. Elizabeth who settled in Boston, and Martha Harding a widow who settled in Plymouth Massachusetts as early as 1632 and is mentioned further as the wife of Joseph Harding below. I Joseph Harding the immigrant ancestor of this line came to Maine it is believed as early as 1623 in the company of Governor Gorges and when the colony was abandoned took refuge at Plymouth. He may have died however before the family removed to Plymouth for we find that his widow Martha Harding was taxed at Plymouth January 2 1632-33. The inventory of her goods was made by James Hurst, Francis Cook, and John Doane and amounted to the value of twenty pounds eighteen shillings and six pence. She died in 1633 leaving her son Joseph to the care of John Doane who was probably her brother, her elder son John having been committed to his care prior to her death. The sons returned to Braintree Massachusetts afterward to take possession of their father's land in that place. Children of Joseph and Martha Harding: John of previous mention, Phoebe married John Brown, Winifred married Thomas Whiton, Joseph mentioned below. II Joseph 2 son of Joseph 1 and Martha Doane Harding was born about the year 1630 and lived during his youth with Deacon John Doane of Eastham Massachusetts to whose care he had been consigned by his widowed mother who was probably a sister, removed to Braintree circa 1650, married Bethia Cook.
=== !From Harold Cook group sheets, Joseph H ===
!From Harold Cook group sheets, Joseph Harding was raised by John Doane.
=== !See notes for her father. The FGRA shee ===
!See notes for her father. The FGRA sheet gives her birth about 1600, Engl, married 1624 Joseph Harding, died 1633. "The Doane Family" says "[Oct 28, 1633] At this Court John Done presented an inventory of the goods and chattels of Martha Harding, deceased, who in behalf of her son was allowed the administracon of the said Martha. (Plymouth Colony Records Vol. 1, p. 18.) Note. The widow Martha Harding was taxed in Plymouth in 1632, and was living there in March, 1633. It has been suggested that she was a sister of Mr. John Doane. Martha Harding's inventory was presened Oct. 28, 1633. It states she died without will, leaving a son in the custody of Mr. John Done, in behalf of whom Mr. Done is allowed to administer. ..... John Done charge her estate with L9.9.1 money lent to, or paid out for Martha Harding. ... Would John Doane have paid out over nine pounds for the widow Harding, if she was not a relative: Unless a relative, would Martha Harding have left a son to the custody of John Doane when she evidently had other children in Plymouth grown to manhood and womanhood?" This doesn't seem enough proof to conclude that Martha was his sister. The author quotes another record of his having another child, daughter of Peter Brown, in his custody until she reach the age of 17 at which time she chose her uncle John Brown as guardian. But the author doesn't suggest that this child's mother was John Doane's sister. Both records are from "Plymouth Colony Records" vol. 1 pg 18 with another concerning Mary Brown from vol. 2 pg 76. LDS proxy temple ordinances for Martha are from the FGRA sheet of her parents except sealing of marriage is from the LDS IGI.

they returned to Braintree, not to become proprietors of the town, but to occupy
their patrimonial estate, of which, neither the ignoring of the claims of Gorges, nor
the grant of Braintree to Boston, and the assignment of her lands to others, had
deprived them.

Note: JOSEPH HARDING
JOSEPH HARDING of Braintree, as his name appears on the records, was probably a mariner, engaged in fishing, and after his marriage in 1624 to Martha Doane of Plymouth, he removed to Cape Cod. So far as the records reveal he was the father of but two children:
John , born about 1625 .
Joseph , born in 1629.
Joseph Harding died in 1630 and left a widow, Martha , who died at Plymouth in 1633 , leaving only personal property in that jurisdiction inventoried 28 Oct. of that year by James Hurse , Francis Cook and John Doane at £20:18:6, and a young son, Joseph, to the care of her brother, John Doane, to whom she undoubtedly previously committed the care of the elder son John .
Joseph Harding was a member of the Gov. Gorges party which was abandoned by him and he removed to Plymouth. His sons completed their minority at Duxbury and Eastham, returning then to Braintree to occupy their patrimonial estate, of which neither the ignoring of their claims by Gorges nor the grant of Braintree to Boston and the assignment of her lands to others had deprived them.
John, the elder brother, married ________ Hurst and had a daughter Sarah who married John Tower, and a son John who removed to Bridgewater about 1707 .
Joseph, the younger son, married Bethiah Cook April 4, 1660. Over 700 direct descendants of the two brothers had been definitely traced as early as 1862, the greater portion of them from Joseph and Bethiah Harding.
