=== Life Sketch ===
Joseph Andrews was the son of Thomas Andrews and mother unknown. One history indicated that the family was of Devonshire, England, but no confirmed source has been located. It is estimated that Joseph was born about 1597 and htat he was of the "West counties" rather than from the Hingham, England area where many of the early settlers were from.
We know that Joseph was married to a woman named Elizabeth because of property and estate records, but don't know for sure if this was his first wife, as there is an apparent gap in the children.
Joseph, his father Thomas, and presumably his wife Elizabeth and their first children arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony possibly before 1635 when the area they settled was known as Bare Cove. Joseph and his father drew adjoining house lots in September 1635 along North Street where the post office is now located. Joseph built a home ca 1638 in that location that was garrisoned. The house passed through twelve generations, predominantly along the female line, and eventually became known as the Perez Lincoln home after one of the owners.
He was sworn first town clerk constable in Hingham 1635. Was Representative to the Gen. Ct. in 1636-37-38. Partnered with Thomas Loring, Nicholas Jacob, and Clement Bates to establish a weir on Layford's Liking.
Joseph, Elizabeth, and their youngest children are known to have relocated to Duxbury for about ten years from the mid 1650s to the mid 1660s. In Duxbury he was surveyor of highways in 1654, constable in 1664.During that time they turned much of their property to their son Thomas. They returned to Hingham in the mid 1660s and Joseph died there in 1679. Elizabeth was assigned a seat in the new Meetinghouse in Hingham when it opened in 1681. She lived until 1688.
There is some uncertainty about the order and date of birth of some of their children.
It appears that Joseph may have used birth order in his will except for naming Thomas last.
In that case, his children would be (in this order):
Elizabeth
Hannah
Mary
Thomas
Joseph
Ephraim
Hepzibah
There is some confusion because baptismal records have only been found for two children; Elizabeth and Ephraim. That for Elizabeth dates to March 1638. However it is believed that Elizabeth married Mark Eames, and if so, a birth circa 1621 would fit the timeline much better, as they would have married ca 1648. Nor all children were baptized, and baptisms did not necessarily occur immediately after birth.
Abigail Andrews (ca 1647-1723) was erroneously identified in a Hingham history as the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Andrews. Research has proven she was the daughter of Henry and Mary Andrews of Taunton, Massachusetts. She married John Wadsworth. The children of Joseph Andrews were named in his will and do not include Abigail.

Comment from another researcher who has sought sources to back up claims to no avail:
\There is a marriage record for Thomas Androwe and Mary Simon on 12 Feb 1593 in Stokeinteignhead, Devon, England at Family Search. There are then 12 birth records for children of Thomas Andrews (and variant spellings) in Stokeinteignhead in the years 1595-1622, but none of them are named Joseph. There is a son, Gregorie, born 06 Oct 1597, the year Joseph is alleged to have been born.

Joseph Andrews [constable 1664/1665]
Biographical
There are no mentions of Joseph Andrews outside the years 1654-1664. He appears in no listings of freemen, except for having taken the oath of fidelity in 1657. He may have only stayed in the colony during those years, or may have died before 1670 (the first comprehensive listing of freemen after his last mention). The only assertion that can be made about his personality is that he was very lazy when the time came to survey the highways.1657. Took the oath of fidelity at Duxbury (PCR 8:181).Career
3 October 1654. Served on a civil jury (PCR 7:72). Served again several times, with his last appearance 3 October 1665 (PCR 7:87, PCR 7:98, PCR 7:100, PCR 7:126, PCR 7:127). 6 March 1654-5. Served on jury finding Robert Latham guilty of manslaughter of his servant John Walker, and sentencing him to die by burning (PCR 3:73) and on a jury for a "false oath" by Joseph Tilden (PCR 3:75).ca 1655. At some time he was appointed to be a highway surveyor of Duxbury-- see "Legal." 8 June 1655. Served on Grand Inquest (PCR 3:78).June 3 1656. Served on jury regarding lands of Arthur Howland and the deceased Thomas Chillingsworth (PCR 3:102) 7 May 1662. Served on a committee examining the death of Thirston Clarke, Sr., of Duxbury, who was lost in the cold (PCR 4:12)1 June 1663. Allowed to make decisions in Faith Clarke estate regarding the payments of debts (PCR 4:39).8 June 1664. Appointed constable of Duxbury (PCR 4:51). Perhaps this was in lieu of the fine mentioned in "Legal."
Legal 8 June 1655. Presented to the Grand Inquest, with Robert Barker, surveyors of the highways, for "neglecting to mend the highwaies in the township of Duxburrow" (PCR 3:82). He also appears to have been serving in the Grand Inquest at the time (see "career") (PCR 3:78) 4 August 1663. Fined five shillings for refusing to serve on a jury for laying out highways in Duxbury (PCR 4:45). Also listed in that day's treasury account (PCR 8:108). 16 June 1664. Either a second fine of five shillings or a reminder of the earlier debt (PCR 8:110). Estate Management 10 December 1661. Signed, with John Tracy, for the inventory of Thurston Clarke
(PCW&I 551).
