  IX. JAMES, fourth baron of Stair, a man of parts and learning.
  
  He was a great promoter of the reforma∣tion, and joined the earls of Lennox and Glen∣cairn, in accomplishing that great work. He was, with them, at the conflict on Glasgow∣muir, for which he afterwards got a remission from the duke of Chattelherault,* when regent, &c.
  
  He married Isabel, daughter of George Crawfurd of Lifnorris, by whom he had a son and successor,
