=== There is a reference "English Sirnames" ===
There is a reference "English Sirnames" that provides some information on the Patch name. Some names cited are Seman Pac or Pach died in 1177/8, Nicholas Pache from Oseney i 1248, Henry Patche from Bec c 1248, and William Payche from SRSF in 1327. Pache is from pasches (Easter or Passover, the Hebrew holiday). It apparently was often given to anyone born around Easter time. It was used as a first name in the early days and then became a surname eventually. Other variations are Pack and Pach. Another source has the birth as 1528; maybe the William Payche and this person are the same. Still another record suggested that the name was indeed Payche. The same information can be found in the "New Dictionary of American Family Names" by Elsdon C. Smith. From time to time, those researching the Patch family note William's last name was Patche. Another source is "Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames" by C.W. Bardsley. Here variations are listed as Patch, Pache (Easter), Pask, Pash, Pass, Pace, peace, Pease etc. Also could be after official fool, a very honorable personage in his day, see Wolsey in 'Illustrations of Shakespere', 258.
Some additional comments from Greg Patch in Australia on the above are as follows. The earlier records from Meare and Westbury sub-Mendip have 'Pache' and 'Pach' also occurs. There is also a 'Patchway' in Bristol and 'Patching' in Sussex that are derived from the Saxon 'Paecc,' which apparently means "plot of ground," hence "cabbage patch" etc. He adds to the debate with "It's something that will be a source of speculation as to whether we are the descendants of fools (as in the Shakesperrean foole) or of someone born at Easter."
This was sent by Steve Patch: Compiled by Lloyd R. Patch, Kingston, Ontario. September, 1998. Also, from the accessgeneology.com site, origin of Patch: Their explanation of the derivation of the name is "Pache is the Middle English form of pasches "Easter". In his "Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames" C.W. Bardsley lists two derivations: (1) Bapt. 'the son of Pache' (ie Easter), one of almost endless variants of Pasche; vide Pask, Pash, Pass, Pace, Peace, Pease &c. For a diminutive vide Patchett. (2) Nickname 'Patch' an old name for the official fool, a very honorable personage in his day. Wolsey had two fools, both occasionally called Patch (see 'Illustrations of Shakespeare', i,258). It is hard to say which (1) or (2) is meant in the following: 'Item, the same day to Pache in reward for bringing a present' 1592: Privy Purse Expenses Henry VIII, p86. Item delivered to Pache, for a present of Poyngarnettes oranges' 1503: ibid p93. The following is obvious: 'And ii payer (of hosen) for Patche, the Kinges fole (fool)' 1530: privy Purse Expenses, Henry VIII, p86. The smaller "Penguin Dictionary of Surnames" by Cottle (2nd edition) gives the Easter derivation, by way of Middle English pasch or pask, from church Latin from Greek from Hebrew (= 'passover')! Which are we fools or born about Easter?
William may have had a daughter Jane; however, it seem more likely that this Jane (in the AF records) was confused with the Jane Patch (maiden name unknown) that was the wife of Nicholas, William's son. In the AF these two Jane's appear essentially the same. Without further research in England, this question remains unresolved. The Parish Registers of South Petherton show that he was buried.
A recent listing from Greg Patch in Australia has a d. Elizabeth. This has been added, but there is no verification available.
Still another suggested date b, 6/15/1514 from Lorraine Zigman. Ca. 1520 has also been cited in some references.
Doris Amsbury 's book indicated that research on the original records by Robert Rankin showed the NEHGR records of 1917 are one year in error, which could account for the many 1-year differences found in subsequent citations.

=== four mergers of William Patch ===
I note that theree have bee 4 mergers of William Pach. 0ne or two of which had to be improper mergers. Because of mishmash with New Family Search i made no atempt to pull them apart. The miss match of children is the evidence. I have deleted two out of bounds parent child relationships which were probably the result of improper merges.
