  John Bate was a Jurat of Lydd, Parish of All Hallows, England. His wife died before 31 Jul 1522. They had 2 children on record: Thomas Andrew d after 22 Feb 1532/3 John died between 31 Jul and 17 Sep 1522. Source : Bates, George E. _Bates - Breed Ancestry, Boston, MA, 1975. Section A1 p. 18. Harding claims that Thomas' son John died in 1522. Source : Harding, Louis B., _Bates_, unpublished family notes. Newton Bates writes, "It is possible that this John, son of Thomas, is the ancestral John who died in 1522. If this conjecture be correct the line would be through Thomas Bate." (P. 2.) Given Harding's claim that this is correct, it seems reasonable to consider accepting Newton Bates' lineage. John Bate of Lydd died in 1522. He was Jurat of Lydd, and left about 20 pounds to the Lydd church in his will. Kent, England Note: 'John Bate of Lydd, county Kent, England, jurat, in his will, dated July 31 and proved Sept. 17, 1522, names his sons Thomas and Andrew as executors, mentions the wife of Andrew and Joan the daughter of Andrew. England was a Catholic country at this time and the will provides bequests for the high altar, for the reparation of the church, to a priest to sing for his soul, to poor people for the health of his soul for five years next after his death, for a dirge for his soul, for four masses, one each of 'Our Lady,' of the Trinity, of the Holy Ghost and of Requiem, and as many at his month's day and twelve month's day, and provides payment for the priests for singing these masses.[4]
