Note: Much of this information is from Robert L. French, Esther G. French, and Coralee Griswold, The Greswold Family: 12 Generations in England (Wethersfield, Connecticut: Griswold Family Association, 1999), 13. It clearly lays out the Generations of Griswold families, as much as is known about them, in England. Their family relationships are more clearly defined in an easy to read manner. This would be very helpful in untangling the FamilySearch Tree and merging duplicates. Generation Three 3. RICHARD3 GRESWOLD (Ralph2, John1) of Solihull, son of (2) Ralph2 and Margaret (DADLEY) GRESWOLD, was born between 1201 and 1397, and died between 1312 and 1411[50] in Solihull[50]. He married (TH-2) _____ GROME of Kineton, daughter of (TH-1) William GROME Generation Four 4. WILLIAM VEL THOMAS4 GRESWOLD (Richard3, Ralph2, John1), son of (3) Richard3 and (TH-2) _____ (GROME) GRESWOLD, was born between 1319/20 and 1386, and died between 1379 and 1496 in Solihull[51]. He married (SS-2) ISABELL GRANGE, daughter of (SS-1) Thomas GRANGE. [50, 15, 55, 51] vel is the Latin term for "or" and William is almost always termed thus. In later records the term "als" (alius} is more frequent but means the same.[50]

Dousabel Leigh, b. about 1575 11. +HENRY11 GRESWOLD (Richard10, Thomas9, Richard8, John7, John6, John5, William vel Thomas4, Richard3, Ralph2, John1), son of (12) Richard10 and Margaret (HALL) GRESWOLD, was christened on 14 June 1563[38] in Fillongley[38], and died between 30 Oct. 1592 and 1672/3. He married in Belbroughton[38], on 30 Oct. 1592[38], (WN-3) DOROTHY JAMES, daughter of (WN-2) Henry and (ZO-6) Bridget (LITTLETON) JAMES, who was born about 1567 in Kenilworth, and died in 1630 in England. [38, 15, 3, 56] None of his descendants came to America.[38]Child: 16i.GEORGE 12 GRESWOLD, b. about 1600. Many sites have perpetuated the error that Dorothy James married a George Greswold and had various children who came to America. The available records do not support this. Dorothy James married Henry Greswold in Belbroughton, Warwickshire in 1592. They did have a son George (as well as Humphrey and William). However, George was only about 13 years old (i.e., born ca 1588) when his father died in 1601/2. George died about 1615. George was presumably unmarried as no mention is made of a wife or children and all of his property (including Greet Hill) went to his brother Humphrey. His father was born in 1563 (his mother, Dorothy, is reputed to have been born about 1567 and died in 1656). Thus they could not have had a son George born in 1548.[23] ++ 15. GEORGE11 GRESWOLD (Roger10, John9, John8, John7, John6, John5, William vel Thomas4, Richard3, Ralph2, John1), son of (13) Roger10 GRESWOLD, was christened on 6 Nov. 1574[46] in Wooten Wawen[46], and died between 1613 and 1633[46]. He married about 1606[46], DOUSABEL LEIGH, who was born about 1575[46], was buried on 28 Aug. 1615[46] in Wooten Wawen[46]. [45, 15, 8, 46] The George Greswold mentioned in the eleventh generation in the Visitation of Warwickshire, 1619, may be the father of Edward Griswold, who emigrated from Kenilworth, England, to Windsor, Conn. in 1639. It is clear from a deposition made by Captain George Griswold that the great grandfather's name was George Griswold, who had three sons, Edward, Matthew and Thomas. There is thus the possibility that George Griswold, father of Edward and Matthew, is to be identified with the George Griswold of the eleventh generation. More than this possibility, or at most probability, cannot be affirmed as yet. The Kenilworth parish records prior to 1630, which might have settled the question, were destroyed during the wars of the Commonwealth, and the Griswold family in England has become extinct. There are facts enough, however, to make the connection between the Griswolds, of Windsor, Conn. and the Greswold heraldic family of Kenilworth and Solihull, Warwickshire, at least possible if not probable.[15] Rev. F. W. Chapman in his unpublished memoranda on the Griswold family held the opinion that the grandfather of Edward and Matthew was a Francis Griswold, on what grounds it is not known.[16] "Matthew Griswold, Esq., of Kenilworth, Warwick County, England, had three sons, Edward, Matthew and Thomas, who were cousins to Humphrey Griswold, of Malvern Hall."[26]Children: +17 i.EDWARD12 GRISWOLD, bp. on 26 July 1607[48] in Wooten Wawen[48]; d. on 30 Aug. 1691[48] in Killingworth, Middlesex Co., Connecticut, United States[48]; m. about 1628[48] in England[8, 11] MARGARET _____, b. about 1609[48], d. in Killingworth[8, 12, 48] on 23 Aug. 1670[8, 12, 48]. 18ii.MATHEW GRISWOLD, (ESQ.), b. about 1610 in Kenilworth. From England 1639 Founder of Windsor, CT - to Killingsworth Was listed as father of Edward, in place of George 12. 17. EDWARD12 GRISWOLD (George11, Roger10, John9, John8, John7, John6, John5, William vel Thomas4, Richard3, Ralph2, John1), son of (15) George11 and Dousabel (LEIGH) GRESWOLD, was christened on 26 July 1607[48] in Wooten Wawen[48], and died on 30 Aug. 1691[48] in Killingworth[48]. He married in England[8, 11], about 1628[48], MARGARET _____, who was born about 1609[48], and died on 23 Aug. 1670[8, 12, 48] in Killingworth[8, 12, 48]. [47, 2, 6, 8, 11, 25, 57, 48, 14, 26] The present Clinton, Connecticut is the original Killingworth.[11] There have in the past been incorrect indentifications of Edwards parentage. In 1943, Glenn E. Griswold reported, "In the study of the life of Edward Griswold, the American ancestor, it must be kept in mind that we have at present no authentic record of his parents or birthplace. All the various statements thus far published in reference to that are pure conjecture, and thus have no standing in genealogical history." Since then, the Griswold Family Association has conducted much more research and the line shown here is the line currently published.[19] "Her gravestone is the oldest now standing in the Clinton Congregational burying-ground. It is marked "M. G. 1670". It is reported by some one that Margaret's maiden name was Hicks, on what authority it is not known to us."[17] "Various names have been given to Margaret, the wife, but let it be understood that this is without any authority cited, and that no records thus far found have disclosed her name or parentage; and to set forth something of such importance without positive authority only results in confusion and disappointment. For many years search to solve this question has continued by brilliant historians, without success."[19] "EDWARD. Born in England, 1607; m. there about 1630, MARGARET, whose family name and parentage have not been disclosed; neither have we actual records of his birth and marriage."[10] "Edward Griswold born 1607; married 1630 Margaret daughter of John and Rebecca Diamond, who died 1670, Aug. 30."[4] "He was born in England in 1607; m. there about 1630, Margaret, whose surname is unknown. She died Aug. 23, 1670. Her uncut gravestone, marked "M.G. 1670," is readily discernable and is said to be the oldest in the cemetery at Clinton, Conn."[7] Generation Twelve continues with Edward and Margaret's daughter Deborah Griswold, bp. 1646 who married Samuel Buell.

Note: This is a highly simplified chart of the Greswold family in England whowing the relationship of the Griswold immigrants to America, from the pages of the reference "The Griswolds Family: Twelve Generations in England." This simplified chart distinguishes the line of Edward Greswold and Margaret Blencoe, parents of Michael Griswold of Wethersfield, CT from the line of Edward and Margaret Griswold of Killingworth, and his brother Matthew Griswold of Saybrook. (They are cousins through a 5th great grandfather.) It also shows the line of Francis Griswold of Cambridge, not as a brother of Edward and Matthew Griswold, but a cousin through their 4th great grandfather. Edward and Matthew shared father George and his first wife, Dousabel, and his second wife, Honora. George's father was Roger, whose father was John. (Of course, many records were destroyed during the time of Cromwell, but researcher tend to agree this is the most probable relationships.)

Note: EDWARD GRISWOLD IN RECORD EDWARD GRISWOLD, Christened 26 July 1607, at Wootton Wawen, Warwickshire, England, died 30 Aug 1691 P. 49. Mary (2nd wife of Francis Griswold in America, son of Clement Griswold) also married (2) William Bullard. He was born about 1594. He came to New England about 1636, the son of William Bullard and Grace Bignett of Suffolk, England. In 1638 William was witness to proving a will. He settled first at Watertown, later at Dedham, and moved to Cambridge about 1638. His will dated 5 Jul 1679, gives his age as about 85 years. William died 23 Dec 1686. William and Mary were members of the church in Cambridge in 1658. ("The Griswold Family: 12 Generations in England") #88. George Greswold, son of Roger, was christened 6 Nov 1574 in Wooton Wawen, Warwickshire, England. George died 1623. He marrid (1) Dousabel (Leigh?) about 1606. She was born about 1575. Dousabel was buried 28 Aug 1615 in Wooton Wawen, Warwickshire, England. They had one child:
Page: Pg. 15-17. John Greswold and Elizabeth Beynham had three children: John Greswold, born about 1440; Anne, born about 1442/1445 and married Thomas Hawes; and Robert, born about 1450. John is the common grandfather of all three branches of Griswolds who immigrated to America. He is the John Greswold, Esq. who died 1481, for whom the writ was issued in Feb 1482 (according to the 1473 deed , he then lived in Rowington). John is a critical link in the family because his parents, John and Elizabeth (Beynham) Greswold were born too early to be parents of Richard who died at Solihull in 1537 and who is buried in St. Alphege at Solihull. John was the chief beneficiary of the maneuvers of his father’s uncle Thomas. John is not mentioned in Pemberton but is given in Philpott as, “John Greswold, Esq., grantor of a release to Robert Greswold of Solihull.” This 1481 transaction was just prior to the issuance of the writ on 5 Feb 1482. Part of the Hawes estate which his father, John inherited from his grandfather, John, went to Richard, the Vicar of Tanworth in 1459. What John inherited from his grandfather, Thomas Beynham of Henley was conveyed to his son Richard in 1472. This 1472 deed referring to what he inherited from Thomas Beynham provides additional support for the identity of his mother, Elizabeth, wife of John. In 1473, “John Greswold, son and heir of John Greswold of Rowington, and Richard Greswold, his son, released to Robert Greswold of Solihull all their rights to messuages, etc. in Olton. Further, at “Feast St. Catherine Edward IV, 25 Nov 1481, grant by John Greswold of Solihull, the elder, Esq. to Robert Gresweld of a croft in the same.” This looks like a deed in anticipation of his impending death. John Greswold lived in Rowington in 1473 and 1481, but not late enough to live at South Rookery Farm in 1548. John died 1481 in Rowington, Warwickshire, England. His spouse has not been identified but they were married about 1465/68. They had two children: Richard Greswold, born about 1470, oldest son and heir. His birthdate has been a problem because he has to be the oldest son. He died 17 Sep 1537. And John Greswold, of Rowington born about 1472, died 20 Jun 1515.

Note: 8. John6 GRESWOLD (6.John5, 5.William4, 4.Richard3, 2.Ralph2, 1.John1) of Solihull (and Longden Hall, home of his mother) and Rowington was born about 1414 (age 44 at death of his uncle Thomas in 1458). In 1459, John6 conveyed to his brother Richard (who died in 1465) the property he inherited from their father John5. He married Elizabeth BEYNHAM, probably just before 1440. She was the daughter of Thomas BEYNHAM of Henley. John died about 1473 in Rowington, Warwickshire, England. Elizabeth also died in Rowington, Warwickshire, England. In the next two generations. the Greswolds divided among Solihull, Longden and Rowington, They had 3 children: 12. m i. John GRESWOLD. born about 1440. He is the John Greswold, Esq. who died 1481, for whom the writ was issued in Feb 1482 (according to the 1473 deed [see p 16], he then lived in Rowington). 13. f ii. Anne GRESWOLD, born about 1442/1445. She married Thomas4 HAWES (Thomas3, John2, Richard1) of Edlicott in 1465. He was born 1440. Thomas died 1540, at the age of 100. They were namesakes (five generations later) of the couple who married 150 years earlier. 14. m iii. Robert GRESWOLD, born about 1450, as he received property in 1473 and in 1481. He presumably stayed at Olton in Solihull. He may have been of the next generation as he appears first in 1473, in records that also include John7 and Richard8. The only other record so far is the release mentioned showing him at Olton in 1481.
