Biography
Early Life
Thomas was born about 1485 (estimate only), the son of Thomas Astley of Hilmorton & Melton Constable and _ Lomner of Manington.[1]
Marriages
There are conflicting accounts and genealogies as to how many wives Thomas had, and which wife produced which children. It is known that his son and heir, John Astley of Upton, was born around 1514, and that this John was son of Thomas and Anne Broughton.[2] It can also be asserted with confidence that one of his youngest sons - Thomas Astley of Writtle, was born around 1530 and was possibly the son of Thomas and his wife Anne Cruse. The real problem comes with his second son John Astley of Allington. This latter John's birth, 1507, can be reasonably substantiated by the age given on his burial monument. [3]However, this makes him 7 years older than John Astley of Upton, who is Thomas (senior's) son and heir. So perhaps John of Allington was actually the eldest son and passed over for inheritance, or he was not a son, but perhaps a brother to Thomas senior?
?Anne Wood - Marriage & Children?
Thomas Astley married Ann Wood, daughter of Robert Wode of East Barsham, Esq. and sister of Elizabeth, the wife of Sir James Boleyn of Blickling. She died in child-bed, and was buried at Blickling.[2] [1] Their child:
John Astley of Allington, Maidstone, MP, born around 1507.[1] [3] m1 Katherine Champernoune, m2 Margaret Lenton, illegitimate daughter of Lord Thomas Grey.[3]
Anne Broughton - Marriage & Children
Thomas Astley married Anne Broughton, daughter of Edward Boughton of Lawford, Warwickshire.[2] They had one son:
John Astley of Upton, son and heir, born 1514 (aged 30 at his father's death in 1544),[2] married (before 1535 [In the 26th of Henry VIII. January 4] - when his wife is mentioned in a trust settlement)[2] Frances, dau of John Cheney of Sittingbourne.[4]
Anne Cruse - Marriage & Children
Thomas Astley married Anne Cruse of Warwickshire.[1] Their children included:
Thomas Astley of Writtell (Writtle), Essex, estimated birth 1530.[1]
Richard Astley of Jewel House, m. Margaret Stamford, dau of Judge Sir William Stamford of Hadley.[1]
Death
By an inquisition, taken September 16, in the 36th of Henry VIII (1544). at Norwich castle, Thomas Asteley, Esq. of Melton, was found to die October 19, last past, seized of this manor and advowson, and the manors of Burgh, Bruningham, Langham, &c. and John was his son and heir, aged 30.[2] [5]
