  SIR JOHN WILLIAM CARTER was born about 1475 of Chipperfield, Kings Langle, Hertfordshire, England, to Sir John Nicholas Carter (1450-1500) and Lady Margaret Frazier (1440-1510.) He married Lady Ann Alice Croxton about 1432, Watford, Hertfordshire, England.
  
  John William Carter died 14 August 1521, Watford, Hertfordshire, England, age 46.
  
  William Carter of Watford (ca. 1460-1521) married Alice, maiden name unknown. William may have been a grandson of John Carter of Watford whose will of 14 December 1446 refers to five sons but not by name. William Carter signed his will on 14 August 1521; proved 30 August 1521. His son Richard was executor; the overseer was William Hyll. The will names three daughters (a) Alice and (b) Johanne, and s three sons (c) Richard, (d) William of St. Albans and (e) John of Rickmansworth. Although Currer-Briggs included the will of William Carter of Watford in an appendix, he did not connect him in the narrative to the three sons noted above; but their inherited properties, clearly specified in the will, establish their identity beyond any doubt.   John Carter of Rickmansworth, who left his will in 1545, had a son John Carter II, who also left his will in Hertfordshire in 1602. John II married (1) Joan Pyging and (2) Margery Dickinson. Of his six children, John Carter III (born 1564) married Elizabeth Hawtrey. They had two sons, both mariners who came to Virginia; James Carter died in England in 1626/27, while John Carter IV, who died at Sherley Hundred in Virginia in 1639, married (1) Jane Cleare in 1611 and (2) Joan Lee, widow of Thomas Lee the Vintner of Virginia.
