=== Life Sketch ===
Biography
Margaret is clearly listed as the wife of Thomas Bate (1440-1485) who died 1485 and the mother of John Bates in her husband's will dated 19 Oct 1495.
Death
Margaret, the relict of Thomas Bate (1440-1485) wrote her will 14 Oct 1490, probated 17 Jan 1491, only mention daughter Alice and son John.
Research Notes
There is no credible proof that her maiden name was Caulkins.
=== [v01t0296.ftw] There is a will of Marga ===
[v01t0296.ftw] There is a will of Margareta, Relict of Thomas BATE, listed among the Lydd records. This will was found in the "Bates Bulletin" (p. 94). If this is the same as Margaret, wife of Thomas, (the dates certainly make that possible--the will is proved Oct. 14, 1490), she names a daughter, Alice BATE, and one John BATE, Sr. (who may have been the father of the other John BATE (known as John BATE, Jr.). This is certainly speculative.
