Biography
Uncertain Parents
Thomas Bate MIGHT be the son of John Bate and Sara Roberts, but there is no conclusive evidence. The only sources that exist are family histories. The names are common making it impossible to determine what child belongs to which parents. They are being detached until definitive proof can be found.
Marriage
Thomas clearly married a woman named Margaret as can be seen in will dated 19 Oct 1485.
Known Children
1.) John Bate
2.) Alice Bate
Death
Thomas Bate died before 19 April in the year 1486.
"To the Brotherhood of St John Baptist 12d. Wife Margaret all my household things & son John one large brass pot after the death of his mother. Wife to have 2 cows & 7 sheep with the increase of this year. Executors wife Margaret & son John. Wife to have for life my chief house with kitchen & garden, 18 acres of land situated near the land of John Sweting senior & another house which Laurence Hamond now holds to farm, after her death to son John & his heirs. Son John remainder of my lands tenements & rents paying 20s/- yearly to his mother."
Research Note
An family book which does not cite sources says that he (Thomas Bate) was married to a woman named Agnes Gawho was nine years older than him and they had three children, a girl named Julianna in addition to the two boys named William and John Bates. This is an incorrect assumption. There is no evidence of a son named William or a daughter named Juliianna.
They were completely different people. Agnes Gawkrogers was b 21 Jan 1544 Halifax Sowerby, Yorkshire, England, Thomas Bate b. Abt 1539 in Halifax Sowerby, Yorkshire, England.
