  John was heir to Balcaskie from his father George and mother Janet Spens in April 1535.
  When Somerset invaded Scotland with a force of 16,000, the Scots suffered 5,000 casualties at River Esk on the Firth of Forth, and Somerset captured Edinburgh. In the course of the invasion, John Strang IV of Balcaskie fell at the Battle of Fawside (9/10/1547) or Battle of Pinkie (9/10/1547).
