Immediate Family:
Daughter of Sir John St. Clair of Herdmanston and Polwarth and Katherine Home
Wife of Sir George Ker of Samuelstown and George Home, 2nd of Wedderburn
Mother of Nichole Ker and David Home, 3rd Baron Wedderburn
Sister of Margaret Sinclair, Heiress Of Polwarth; Sir William St. Clair of Herdmanston and Lady Mary Agnes Hume/Home, Heiress of Polworth
Margaret, youngest daughter and co-heir of John Sinclair, of Herdmanstoun, Polwarth and Kimmerghame, sister of Mariota, who maried [Sir Patrick's] brother. [From History of Dunbar Hume and Dundas from Drummond's Noble British Families, William Pickering, London 1846] There is a remarkable story connected with the marriage of these two sisters (Sinclair) which has given celebrity to a thorn, that has been the subject of many a poetic effusion. In this age, there were dreadful contentions for heiresses, and few were married without having been the occasion of one or more broken heads, and it generally happened that the most powerful gained the prize. But of all their lovers Mariota and Margaret Sinclair preferred the sons of their powerful neighbours and their cousins; but after the death of their father they fell into the hands of an uncle, who, anxious to prevent their marriage, that he might succeed to the estate, immured them in his castle in Lothian. By means of an old beggarwoman they got a letter transmitted to their lovers, and the two youths soon appeared at the castle gate at the head of a strong body of Merse men. The uncle made all possible resistence, but could not prevent his nieces being carried off before his face in triumph to Polwarth. The marriage was immediately celebrated, and part of the nuptial rejoicings consisted in a dance round a thorn, which grew in the center of the village. In commemoration of that affair, all marriage parties thenceforth danced around the thorn, for which purpose an air was composed, called "Polwarth on the Green," to this air many words have been adapted. [From History of Dunbar Hume and Dundas from Drummond's Noble British Families, William Pickering, London 1846]
=== This lady brought with her to the marri ===
This lady brought with her to the marriage the lands of Kimmerghame in Berwickshire.
=== Mariot's mother is also listed as Cather ===
Mariot's mother is also listed as Catherine Home but it is probably in Error. Her birth place is also listed as Midlothian, Scotland.
All of George Hume's and Mariott's children are listed at family search as being born the same year.
Mariot died at Wedderburn Castle. This was the estate of her husband George Hume. I have assumed that he was her second husband rather than her first as some sources list because of this.
Almost all sources at family search list Mariot's parents as John Sinclair and her mother as Isobel her birth abt 1435. However she was probably was the oldest child and born abt 1425 at Herdmanston, East Lothian, Scotland. Only one source lists her parents as William Sinclair and Elizabeth Douglas and born abt 1425. The submitter of this info is Ronald Ramsey of Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Scots Perrage lists Mariota as daughter of John of Hermandston.
